Cameras won't help unless someone knows who the people are. After our break in we had a security system installed and even they said cameras are good for finding out what happened, but do not always give the results people expect.

The MOST important things are pics, SNs and receipts if possible for the items. I always do that and it helped tremendously with the insurance claim.

I know it's only stuff and can be replaced. The feeling of being vulnerable is new to me. I have never had anything stolen from right under my nose. Near as I can figure, my roomate left the door unlocked and they came in while I was sleeping. That took some huevos.
I believe this weekend im gonna park my truck down the street at my friends house and see sleep with one eye open. ;)
No one likes feeling vulnerable. As for huevos, yeah... My wife's employer is trying to get everyone to move to Arizona. After reading reports of people coming out of the shower and finding someone in their home, we are like F-that. With all the bad press on cops, there seems to be a crime wave. Here in Milwaukee, the biggest thing now is for kids to steal cars or just car jack them. Since they are technically juveniles, the system just says "don't do that again" and puts them back on the street. One kid that provoked a teachers assistant into hitting him was out for stealing a car and had been arrested for stealing two more. WTF?!?!

I miss having dogs in the house. They may not have been mean, but their barks sure sound like it! One breed I am looking at is known for not barking at strangers/intruders but sneaking up on them and then attacking.

If you learn anything about security cams, I would be interested to know what you find. I need one for my business but am balancing the cost against an upgrade my insurance company is demanding.

Good luck!

I pretty much figured unless a bit of luck comes along, whoever did it will get away. The chances of me knowing this person will probably be slim to none.
I did stop at the stores where the cards were used. Dillards has their own security but, the cameras are always panning they store. If the person were at the register long enough and if they turned around at the right time, they might have gotten video with a facial picture.
Walmart and Target were of no help at all. The other stores either have no surveillence or the cameras are only on when the corporate office turns them on, they don't run 24/7 or during business hours necessarily.
The more I try to deal with tbis, the more angry, depressed and frustrated I get.
Has anyone ever tried calling the Soc Sec office? Theres another exercise in futility. I need a nap.

Oh, update on our case came not that long ago. One very personal item was recovered and was returned to her just about a month ago (it has been a few years now...). An heirloom firearm that was handed down through generations was recovered during a bust of someone in the next county. They don't think they were the thieves, but they facilitated and had possession of multiple stolen items from various areas.

So while it may take time, sometimes things CAN come back to you. That violated feeling takes a long time to heal though, and these people don't have any emotions that they can do this to someone else. Small consolation is that these sort of people leading a negative life will continue to bring negative things upon themselves, sad but it is what they've chosen.

Thanks j. Forgiveness sometimes is a difficult thing to give. Truly it is much harder to have. Somehow knowing that even years later, something was returned, makes me feel assured that it will all work out.
I often wonder if I can withstand so many tests of faith in life. I must remember that others suffer far worse than I. Every once in a while a reassurance comes from out of nowhere when we least expect it, all we can do is be open to it when it arrives. :)

That just sucks.

I work from home a lot and my home office it at the front of the house near the front door. We have security cameras at both entrances and I am surprised at how many people walk up to the door and turn around and leave as soon as they see the camera. I guess they can't see me in the office secondary to reflections and most of them just go to the next house and are leaving ads on doors but I assume there is a reason they don't want to be on camera. I think it's worth the cost and as soon as my camera detects heat or motion it sends a text to me and I can pull the video on my phone.

Sounds like a fake camera would work fine. Somebody got into our place and stole a VHS camera a long time ago. Yeah ... it's not like the tape in the camera was pornographic in nature, nope.
