Weird speaker locations

I have a 20 yr old(?) Yammie RX-V3300 that’s obviously badly outdated. Along with that, because of the architecture of the house that I live in now which is definitely not speaker location friendly, I’m giving serious thought to upgrading to a new receiver that’s more flexible. The available speaker locations are quite limited – I’ll try to paint a picture for you. There’s only one spot where the TV can go and the main 3 channels will accompany it. There isn’t anyplace else the remaining ear level surrounds can go because of huge picture windows on the right and left sides, and no back wall which is also a high traffic area. (There is a very short wall up near the ceiling that’s tall enough to accommodate small speakers) So picture a 5.1 or 7.1 system with only the 3 front channels. Oddly enough, the house was pre-wired during construction for what would basically be front and rear effects/height speakers (not in-ceiling) with speaker terminals located a good 9+ feet off the floor. The ceiling is a basic 10 foot high vaulted ceiling.

So it’s only a total of 7 channels, but I’m thinking the speaker configuration is going to make it sound pretty bad. Do I have any hope at all of having a good sounding setup? How would I configure the channels in the receiver?

Seriously, I have no life.

In rooms like that build out a good 2.1 or 3.1 system and forget anything else other than considering two rather then one sub. In our great room, that only is suitable for 3.1 at the most. I built just that, and it is excellent and very satisfying. There are a lot of rooms that would be best left as 3.2 at the most, but have other channels shoehorned in to the detriment of the end result. Less is always more in your situation.

Good advice. I'll probably go that route if I can't think of better.
