We still might have Krispy Kreme

I don't know if you doughnutholics are aware that Krispy Kreme has been at the point on disappearing, well they fired their CEO and replaced him with the guy who took Enron through it's bankruptcy, good news is that shares were up today 21%, bad news is they're closing down most of their brick and mortar operations. So if you like them, get them while they're hot, probably by year's end they'll be available from regular stores only.:(

Never have tried one but noticed that both the B&M stores in my area have become something else. I notice that the local market has them on display so I wonder how far they're shipped and where they're made these days. Seems that they kind of cut the throat of their B&M shops by offering them in the market to some extent. Only reason I noticed that the stores had closed is that there seemed like a lot more cops driving around aimlessly.

I don't get what the big deal is. I remember when one opened up in Fremont a few years ago, there was a line around the building. It's just a donut. Personally, I like mom-and-pop shop donuts better. Krispy Kreme's are a little small for my taste.

I'm not overly impressed with them here.

Item 1. They gotta be fresh, otherwise they are nothing.

The ONLY place I can find to get 'em fresh here is on 23rd st. in NY.

Item 2. They don't travel well.

I have seen, over the past few years, where heated cases have popped up in various mini-marts and the like that sell donuts shipped from the bakery but by the time they reach that point, they are just another donut. I've tried 'em (several times to be fair) but was not impressed.

If they were serious about penetrating the market here (which is pretty much owned by Dunkin' Donuts, which travel much better), they would have more bakeries and sell from there, not second-hand vendors.

But, we've got so many ethnic bakeries in our area that either could fade away without a worry. Unless, of course, you want a coffee and a donut at 2:00 in the morning, and that's where dunkin' donuts rules.

All donuts are sweet, of course, but Krispy Kremes are just too sweet for my taste.

Problem is down here, you can get "churros" anywhere, but a good ol' fashion doughnut is out of the question. We use to have a Velvet Creme (mom and pop), but they closed a few years ago. You lucky shmucks that live in the big apple have it good: doughnuts, bagels, pizza, man you guys racked up years ago, we got bupkus. Sure we have lobster, stone crabs, all kinds of seafood, neat latin food, but what fits the bill at 2:00am, a doughnut or a slice of Brooklyn pizza or a bagel shmeared with cream cheese. Now that's the ticket!:D

All those poor cops, what will they ever do?

They will just go to dunkin donuts instead.:D

Worst doughnuts of all time, especially their pre-packaged selections, they taste like mushy cardboard.

I wouldn't miss them in the least. They aren't even that good. If you want good doughnuts, you have to find the small places that still make the real deal. There is only one place for a doughnut in my area: Stan's.

i've been to krispy kreme sanfo, saw them dump in tons of lard too!

I personally only like their plain flavored donuts, but I can only eat about 2-3 before I'm overwhelmed by the sweetness. sure they taste better but, I can probably eat a dozen dunkin donuts/mister donuts.

here in the Philippines, they've just started opening stores :) I guess people here are unawares of the issues that's driving KK from the US ... cause people are falling in line like crazy. we even have drive through KK's.

This is possibly the best donut on the planet. Best when served just out of the refrigerator. :D

Same here. It was like that night and day for over a week. And I think that same store was closed less than a year later.

I agree. They were so sweet they made my teeth hurt.

We had the same experience here. KK opened with huge fanfare in a newly constructed building with deep fry conveyor, only to be closed a year or so later. KK's were great right out of the fryer while still warm.

There's just no way that they could have expected to survive on Tim Horton's home turf.

Pardon my ignorance, Dave, who is Tim Horton?

Tim Horton's is a huge chain of shops that thrive primarily by drive through coffee sales. You can barely drive more than a couple of blocks in any Canadian city with seeing a Tim Horton's. It's probably more of a Canadian cultural icon than the maple leaf.
