Way over my head with receiver choices!

I have a question about my 1705. When I turn it on, my speakers have the faintest sort of hiss coming out of them. What's that? Is it normal? It's never really bothered me, because the output (music, movies, TV, whatever) is always louder than it, but I'm wondering what it is?
If by "faintest sort" you meant you could only hear it by sticking your ears right onto the speaker grill, then it is quite normal. Of all the recievers and amps I had owned in the past, the 3805 was one of the quietest in terms of hiss and the Adcom 555 was the quietest in terms of transformer hum (basically inaudible). I also owned a 1705 and I could not hear any hiss from a few feet away even with the volume turned up with no input signal. That is quite impressive for such an entry level model.

Go to a high end store and check out some of the expensive pieces you will hear those hums and hiss too regardless the fact that they typically use all kinds of clean power devices, high end interconnects and speaker cables. I still remember one time I was so disappointed to hear much louder transformer hum from an Anthem amp than my old 3805.

It is very audible in my room, even when I'm laying in my bed. Is it the "ground floor noise" or something? I can't remember what I'm thinking of is called.

Have you tried having all inputs disconnected and then connect your inputs one at a time? Is the noise "very" audible only when you turned the volume up high when there is no input signal (but connected to a source player)? Was the hiss there from day one?

Point being,ALL mass produced units will have bad batches here and there.
Hopefully, just a small percentage.Add UPS into the equation and you have raised your odds of getting a lemon.Quality training for UPS delivery men is learning the Olympic hammer throw.:D
Forums like these where people come for help are probably a very small cross section compared to units sold.
Folks with sweet running units don't need help and don't need to complain and therefore don't post.
Enjoy your unit, once you get it fired up let us know how you like it.
Enjoy your digital nirvana.
I agree with you for every complaints on forums like this there are many more sweet runnning units and Onkyo probably sold a lot more ARVs than Denon did.

On the other hand if (only if) say both brands sold the same number of units and you hear more complaints of one on forums then it may be ligit to consider perhaps one brand has a higher probability of reliability or quality control issues statistically speaking. Again, Onkyo probably, and quite likely has more units sold world wide than Denon. That could well be one of the reasons why we seemed to see more issues posted on forums.

I'm pretty sure it was there from day one, and shows up up I'm even at the lowest volume setting "-70", and is always there, even on inputs that don't have anything connected to them (AUX, for example.) It's present with any input selected, any sound mode selected (Stereo, Direct, etc.) I can't remember if it happened in my old house, but it happens where I am now, both with my old fronts and the new Paradigms.

I have heard Yamahas are a good choice and very reliable for the prices... why do you not look at those for options?
