Watching TV without HDMI passthrough

so I am going to be hooking up my home theater system and I don't think my receiver has HDMI passthroughI dont know for sure because it is somewhere in the shipping process).. so my question;
Cable TV is going into the receiver via HDMI, and HDMI up to the TV. If my receiver doesn't have the passthrough what is my next best option for watching TV without the surround sound blasting? I thought about a HDMI 2X1 splitter off the cable box, one into the receiver and one into the 2nd HDMI input of the tv. then use HDMI 1 if I wanted the receiver/home theater on or HDMI 2 for regular stereo mode using the TV speakers. What are some good 1in-2out splitters? or is there a better way? thanks audioholics!

What receiver? Few, if any will pass HDMI audio while the unit is off.

yamaha rx-v665.. basically I don't want the surround sound blasting late at night, and would like the receiver and amps to stay off. If it doesnt pass thorugh hdmi(I dont think it does) is the splitter my next option?

Run audio cable direct from the cable box to the tv. That is what I do when my wife watches the news in the morning before work and doesn't want to wake the house with the 5.1 kicking in lol.

You're golden. The RX-V665 will pass an HDMI signal when in standby mode. You just need to select any one of the HDMI sources before going into standby. There's a menu selection to make that's described on page 54 of the manual called "Standby Through."
