Hi, I have a Sharp mini system (CD-BA300) that puts out 125watts max per side, split two way. 50watts for the midrange and tweeter (has crossover), and 75watts to a subwoofer. Now I did away with the stock speakers, and I'm looking to buy a pair of KLH-9915 floor speakers to replace. Would that just be a waste of time and money? Should I be looking for something better?

Do you have an approximate budget you would like to spend? Are you interested in just stereo, or would you eventually like to start a home theater system?

KLH is just radioshacks brand I believe. You can do much better. Do you mind buying used?

Well I should have stated that the money I get from selling another set of floor speakers is my budget for the speakers I want. A pair of Sony SS-MF550H are the ones I'm trying to sell. But to answer your question, no I don't mind buying used stuff.

What would be the cheapest way to start a home theater system with room shaking bass?

I promise you, that thing does not put out 125w of power (they just say an play with their rating numbers that to get you to buy it) and I would NOT use it to power any decent speakers or you will most likley have burned out drivers in no time.

Room shaking bass requires a decent sub or some good towers and a decent amp. You would probably be looking at a few hundred even used, but it can be done if you know what to look for.

Ok so I'm thinking a basic receiver with a line output, a Cerwin Vega CVHD 2.1 system or a CV CMX-12S with some bookshelf speakers. Sound cool enough?

Oh man please stay away from KLH. Never heard anything worth more than free from them. I'd even check out parts express b4 buying KLH. Good online direct brands like HSU, SVS, try audiogon or ebay for used & yes you will find a good startup set for a good price.

Please give us you rough budget, room size & listening habits. That will give us something to go by. Otherwise "room shaking bass on the CHEAP" will do ONLY that...shake the room!

We are glad to help though!

Well my budget is slim, about $500 and the room is a big bedroom. I like to watch movie's and when the action starts, I like my bones rattled with bass.

How about the EMP's in the used section here, seems to me a good price for some pretty darn nice speakers.
Those are very nice indeed, but I'm looking for something with a subwoofer.

Stand alone powered sub is the only way to go. And, $500 would just get a decent one of those. I believe you are thinking woofer.

CV is the best option for a loud set-up with room shaking bass using low power. But I must warn you, it's gonna sound like crap.

A powered sub is gonna need an AV receiver with a sub-out.

Sounds like that boom box you have has separate amps for two different ranges.

First off, you can't simply "join" the two amp outputs to feed one speaker system.

Second, any sub worth it's name will have it's own built-in amp that would over-ride that in the boom box. IOW, they are not additive and the boom-box sub will add nothing.

Third, odds are that the "sub" ampand speakers in the boom box handles a LOT more of the audio range than a real subwoofer does. This may or may not result in a gaping hole between where it stops and the mains amp begins.

Go to Amazon and do a search under Bic Speakers - look at the RTR series.
They are not for me - however, they may be for you.

Waste of time? YES

I would sell everything, and start from scratch. Start with a decent AV receiver, and work your way up.

The Yamaha 3900 from Audioholics for $699 is the best deal going. It will power any speaker set-up you will desire in the future.

Get started on the right foot, otherwise you are just wasting money.

Even if you have to use your boom box speakers with the new receiver, you are heading down a better path.

I don't think you guys get what I'm saying

Ok what I'm saying here guy's is that I probably will sell everything and fetch something new. I have a $500 budget meaning I can't buy anything over that, and I only need my system to be 2.1 channel. So I'm thinking Cerwin Vega CVHD 2.1 powered speaker package. It has the nice crisp clear sounding highs & mids with a powerful subwoofer, thus not sounding like crap - (I heard one at a authorized dealership) so quenching all of my thirsts I'm happy now.

What will be powering the system? To utilize the .1(powered sub), you need something with a sub-output. You dig?

The sub has a built in amp with a full crossover, it powers itself and the tower speakers. All I need is to plug in the signal cord from the receiver.

The problem with this is that its an integrated system with a static crossover. Sure you could run line level outputs to the sub and have the line level outputs go through the sub to your existing speakers, but the sub wouldn't get a full range singal as there is a crossover in front of it with likely a high pass filter in the circuit path. This makes it impossibly to properly calibrate the sub and you will not get full range, or me able to tweak it properly.
