Wanted 10" subwoofer

Hi, I am new to this forum. My JBL PB10 died on me (i learned that this is a common problem after 2 years of normal use) so I'm in the process replacing the 10" subwoofer. I am looking to upgrade to the next step but not going to the extreme of paying $1000 for a sub, the budget ranges from $0-450.

I am looking for something that performs well with music as well as movies
such as Gladiator/Matrix/batmanm, etc. The living room in my townhome is appx 16'x12" with vaulted cieling starting at 8'. Nobody lives under me and I really liked the downfiring (compared to front firing) however I need to be vigilant of a shared wall that is appx 20' away from the middle of the living room and the WAF (wife acceptance factor;) Since I may move into a house in a few years, I am looking for something that will sound good in a larger space too.

My setup comprises of:

Yamaha RXv620, 5.1 Cinema DSP reciever.
Yamaha A200XT towers.
JBL Northridge Center and surrounds.

Based on online research it looks like the HSU Reserch VTF-1 may be a good fit for me. I am interested in getting recommendations on SUBs as well as feedback from anyone who has experienced the VTF-1. Since it is an online purchase, there is no way to really test drive!

Thanks for your help and feedback.

dbhatt, welcome to the forum!

I don't have any personal experience with Hsu subs. I bought an SVS cylinder and am quite happy. The cheapest one is still above your price range, but I'd throw it out there as a consideration. They are downfiring.

Keep in mind that you can test drive Hsu or SVS subs (and other internet brands). For most, you will be responsible for shipping costs if you want to return it, but sometimes that's a small enough cost to risk it.

I'd also recommend contacting Hsu and SVS to ask them which sub(s) they'd recommend for your room. From my personal experience with SVS, and from what I've read about Hsu customer service, they'll both give you straight answers and won't try to oversell you.

Definitely HSU or SVS. Can't go wrong either way.

I just bought this one a few weeks ago. You can find some deals on-line, still might be more then what your looking to spend, but might be cheaper in the long run as it would be a long time before you would have to up-grade from this one. It shakes the house!!!!!

If you aren't going to build the kit, $429 + shipping gets you a SVS PB-10, an over achiever when it comes to 10" subs. $450 + shipping gets you a cylinder 25-31PCi. Tall but takes up less floor space than the PB-10 and has more output with the 12" driver. Either will be plenty for a room that size. I had the PB-10 in a room almost twice that size and it did surprisingly well.

How does the SVS PB10 compare to the HSU VTF1? SVS is front firing, HSU is down firing. My floorboards are very conducive to downfiring subs.

I'll post a good note for Hsu's STF-2. Fairly cheap at $349, in my 10 X 14 HT room, it really cranks. When I plugged it in, at first I was afraid that it would be like too much of a thumping car woofer, but I found that lowering the crossover on the Yamaha receiver to 60hz, turning off the sub's crossover and cranking down the level made the sub mate real well with my NHT main speakers (which are good down to about 60) and surrounds. At reasonable sound levels, this sub is only getting started with lots of reserves for Space Shuttle lift-offs. I'm waiting for the DVD of Spiderman 3, which in my local theater (great sound system) had one of the loudest and lowest bass sounds I have heard in a movie (the making of Sandman). I don't know what stores carry HSU but I ordered via the web and had the unit in a few days.

Front vs down won't really make much difference, regardless of your floor material. The VTF-1 isn't in the same league as the PB-10 and it isn't intended to be; you would need to move up to the VTF-2 Mk3 to get a closer comparison, though that is a 12" sub and $499. I don't know of any stores in the US that carry HSU anymore.

Having one of these myself now, I can certainly second this recommendation. I also just received the STF-1 for a small room setup and that thing is awesome as well. HSU makes quality products across the board. SVS is the only alternative in my eyes.

I would get a nice list of subs and then look around the net for deals. Usually on ebay there can be some nice ones. Also some whole sale sites.

Pinnacle has a closeout on their DIG600 subwoofer. It is dual 12" woofers with 600 wats rms in a 15 x 15 x 15 cube. It is good down to 20hz-22hz as well. PM me for more details on that one.
