I have a Yamaha 990 that I purchased in 1995 and I think it is time to replace it. It works well, except that it doesnt even have digital audio. I am ready to step into a new generation of reciever.

I currently have a Mitsubishi 57" 1080p dlp and absolutely love it. I am planning on purchasing PS3 in the near future (already returned a xbox360, but that's for another forum). I also have Dish network (love the Rush TV channel). I have polk audio (not sure which ones) for the front and just ordered to in-cieling for the rears.

I would like a reciever that has at least 2 HDMI in/1 out, audio and video analogue to hdmi conversion, passthrough 1080p, decent power (mostly watching TV/movies and I will rarely ever test the audio power on the system), 5.1 surround or better, and I dont need preouts except for a sub. (dont listen to xm radio, I have sirius on dish network). I want hdmi switching (I hate the multiple remotes/pressing 8 functions just to watch tv or switch to a movie).

I have seen recommendations for
the yamaha 5990 and
the onkyo 674

Is there any difference in the two that makes one stand out? or is the difference between the two so slight, the it comes down to personal preference?

The HTR-5990 would definitely be an excellent choice. The PS3 decodes Dolby True HD and DTS-HD internally and converts it to 6 or 8 channel LPCM, which your receiver will decode through HDMI, I tell you it doesn't get any better than that.:D
