Want a modestly priced AV receiver

Hello to all . . .

I have a secondary Home Theater system located along with my computer and office machines in a (12'X12') office-den in my home.

All components (HDTV, Blu-ray, VCR, speakers and computer) are connected to a 120W per channel Denon AVR4800 receiver I bought in the year 2000. The receiver has done a good job over the years but lacks many of the features that today's technology provide.

I want to replace this receiver and get rid of all of the analog and digital video and audio cables now attached. A new receiver with HDMI ports will accomplish this.

My main theater has a high-end Pioneer Elite AV receiver. The office-den does not require a receiver of this quality level or cost.

I would appreciate suggestions regarding a modestly priced model with the basic features needed to power and control the other HT components now in the room.

Thank you

Assuming that you are in the US you might consider a factory refurbished receiver from Accessories For Less. They have last year's Onkyo TX-SR607 for $279 plus S&H, and the TX-SR707 for $400 - also last year's model. They did have some of the current model year TX-SR608 but I don't remember the price.

Modest price: about $400 or less.

I thank you other posters who responded. I will check out what you have suggested.

A PM was also received and I am going to consider it over night.

I must say that the quick and helpful responses from members of this forum is outstanding. It is sincerely appreciated.

other "modestly" priced receivers with full audio/video capabilities over HDMI:

Denon 591 / 1611
Onkyo SR508 / SR608

If your PM doesn't work out shepsan, I'd consider Sholling's advice for a refurb, be it Onkyo, Denon, etc.

You're likely to get the best bang for your buck w/a refurb and still maintain a 90 day to 1 year warranty depending upon the manufacturer and reseller... -TD

The responses I received on my post are appreciated. I took advantage of one PM I received and purchased the man's three month old receiver. However, there was a delay in his shipping it and as a consequence I canceled my purchase.

After reading your comments and others I received via email, I decided to buy a fairly entry-level Pioneer VSX-920-K. It arrived yesterday.

The setup was quite easy. The entire job from my opening the carton to watching and listening to my first DVD (not Blu-ray) took just a bit over one hour. The longest part was threading the speaker wires. The receiver fits into a tight space and my body is not as flexible as it once was.

This AV is a nice unit. It does not come close to matching the build or overall quality of the Pioneer Elite VSX-82TSX that I have in my primary Ht room. Nevertheless is has ample features and a solid sound system to make my den-office a quite comfortable place to work and to listen to music, watch TV or a DVD.

I do not have a Blu-ray player in the office as yet. Thus, I am using an older standard DVD player.

The VSX-920-K does a good job presenting both an excellent image and darn good sound from a standard disc. I played LEGENDS OF JAZZ as my initial test disc. I am satisfied that the 920 meets my "wants" for this room.

This is a good entry-level AV at a decent price. If however, a high-end quality AV is required for a more fully equipped HT system, I would suggest one with a better build, more power and features.

Thanks again to you who responded to my first post.

Congrats!

Great to hear, Shepsan.

Sounds like you were able to get a good receiver at a good price to fit the bill for your needs and at the end of the day, that's all anyone can really ask for. Well... you can ask for more, but if you're satisfifed w/your purchase, that's all that matters.. ;) -TD
