Wall mounting of a plasma/lcd set

Hello to all-I'm wondering about mounting methods of a flat panel display (Plasma or LCD)...do I just buy a mount & slap it up there against the sheetrock aligning the mounting holes w/ the studs?
How about a flat slab of furniture grade wood (primed & wall color matched for WAF) which would be placed against the sheetrock & secured before hanging the mount on it
What do the professional installers do?

Most of the pro installs I've seen were done to hide the wiring, or the person that had it done was really clueless about tools, etc, or just had the cash and didn't care. A friend and I put mine up in about a half hour just by putting 4 screws into the studs.

I did see one recently, where they cut a piece of 3/4" veneer plywood that was just the size of the set, and put molding around it like a picture frame. it was stained and finshed really well and the mount lag screws were replaced with bigger/longer ones and the whole thing was screwed to the wall with 6 big screws. It looks like a painting on the wall, except they have a HTPC running a million pics of their dogs and kids, etc on it. The wiring was hidden too. That guy makes his own furniture that matches anything you've ever seen in a store.

Too much work for me.

I've used a nice Chief mount as well as a cheap universal tilting mount (eBay). My results for both were very similar and I would use the universal mount again. It takes longer with the univeral mount because you have to actually put the mount together (read enclosed instructions). But, once together, it had ALL the bolts necessary for about any plasma/lcd in existence, and included the lag bolts and washers to hang it on the wall.

Yes - absolutely - INTO THE STUDS. But, nothing else is necessary really. Just find two studs on your wall, mark them correctly, put the mount up and put the lag bolts through them into the studs w/washers. That should give enough strength to hold a couple hundred plus pound display. I think I mad a post or two, with links about my experience a good 10 months ago... I'll see if I can find it and post the link to it here.

Some good insights above. Just don't mount it on the drywall.
If you want a painted ply sheet on the wall, the wall studs on your wall where you want it may not be lined up properly. Then, you have to offset that ply enough to make it also look good with a Flat TV mounted on it. Then, you fasten the ply to the studs with long screws.
I would not screw the TV mount to the ply with wood screws. 3/4" may not be thick enough to hold a heavy TV over time. There is a T-nut available in hardware stores for machine screws. This mount to the ply from the back so you pinch the mounting bracket to the ply. Plan first, maybe do a cardboard cutout to see if you will like the layout and setup, size of the back mounting board. Then you fabricate. You rush, you remodel later with more costs.
