Hey, all, new member here, tia for any replies

I just purchased a new Yamaha RXV 650 - It sounds GREAT,
here's the question, when listening to a cd, I usually only turn the volume up to say - 45 or so. But when watching a dvd in dts ES I usually have the volume up to around -15. For example, I threw in LOTR return of the king last night, and the background noise that plays at the main menu was bairly audible unless I had the volume up to -20, I don't have any problem cranking it up like this, but just was wondering if this is normal.

the biggest headache is remembering to turn the volume back down before switching to another input, or your ears will get blasted.

Yes this is normal especially if you have different brand/quality input sources.

I use my universal DVD player for cd's and dvd's, but when I switch to my digital set top box I must turn the volume to -20 as aposed to blasting volume levels of only -30 on the dvd's.

No problem there

It's even common to adjust the volume between different content within the same family of media. It all depends on the recording levels used by engineer when making the album or soundtrack.
