I think what you are talking about is dynamic range compression. Basically the idea is the peaks and valleys of the music are reduced into a smaller range. Of course this does take away from the quality of the music or effects in some rooms. In others it's actually necessary.

But to answer your question I'm pretty sure that almost every receiver has a dynamic range compression algorithm. And if you use a PS3 for movies it has one built in that can be increased or turned off.

But if it's a feature you really want then just buy the denon. Denon is a good brand and receivers should be bought for features as much as anything else.

Not sure if thats it...just so the commercials aren't twice as loud as the tv show you are watch...

Ah. I never have that problem on my system. The commercials are the same volume in most cases on the Dolby Digital, but I watch only sports on TV so TV shows may experience the same thing.

As i've said jump on the Denon. In the deals area of our forum strube posted a coupon deal for a site that sells Denon. Check that out. Could save you a lot of money.

pascal, I have Audyssey product, but the dyn eq/vol, but I have the *impression that it will help you more easily enjoy discernable dialogue at lower volumes. IOW, I would have less hopes for reducing the annoyance of ultra compressed commercials.

There was a guy here at AH that chimed in, that actually does those commercials. He said he once tried to reduce the compression, and the employers were disappointed/angry enough that he was actually worried about his job, IIRC. Since, he unfortunately cranks the compression to the max.

But, since you can/will lower the volume and still hear your dialogue, obviously, the commercials will be quieter as a side benefit. Again, not exactly sure how it all works.

As for basic compression in the receiver, you can find those settings just about everywhere, even in your STB most likely. You can set that to maximum too.
