Voices Coming Out of Rear Surround Speakers

Hello,

I have a 5.1 surround system setup (FL, FR, C, SL, SR and Sub). I have 5 Definitive Technology - ProMonitor speakers and a Polk Sub. I have a Yamaha AV Receiver RX-A780. I setup the system back in 2017.

Within the past 2 weeks I have been hearing voices out of both the center and rear SL/SR speakers. It makes the entire room echo and at times difficult to hear the voices. I know there can be voices out of the SL/SR speakers, but it should be minimal, and it is not. I did not change anything. Someone in my family did unplug/disconnect the power cable from the AC wall outlet. Not sure if this would cause the issue and change things.

I verified the speakers are connected properly. I ran the test tone to verify the sound is coming out of the correct speakers. I ran the YPAO and corrected any wiring (polarity) issues. I verified in the Layout the Surround speakers are set to Rear. My Power Amp Assign is at Basic. I have tried different Parametric EQ settings.

Typically, when watching a movie or TV show I have the DSP Parameter set to Standard. Sometimes might use Adventure, Sci-Fi or Spectacle. However, now these are causing the echo and voices coming out of Rear SL/SR mentioned above. Seems the best option now is selecting Surround which now most of the sound only comes out of the Center.

Now I am at a loss on what caused the issue or how to even correct it. My first option is to do a full reset and start over with all settings, but I fear it will not fix the issue.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just for clarity, those speakers are surrounds. Rear surrounds refer the back speakers in a 7.x setup. Yeah, I know…lol
Anyway, if you’re using all the same settings and parameters I can’t say why the AVR would do that. I think there should be two reset options. A soft reset which is basically just unplugging the unit for awhile, and a full reset which you’ve already mentioned. I know it’s a pain, but you’re situation might require a full reset, but definitely try the soft one first. Problem is there’s no real way to know why it went wonky in the first place. So there’s a chance the problem could come back.

Just make sure the unit did not get switched to multichannel stereo, it sounds as if has. What does the front screen say the format is? If it is set to Dolby digital and this happens I think your only hope is a hard reset. That disconnect you talk about may well have upset the processor, and a hard reset will likely do the trick.

I was wondering if it's with actual 5ch content or an upmixer sound mode....or multich stereo for that matter.

I have used Yamaha AVRs for years. I recommend that you don't use any Yamaha DSP modes by selecting Straight. Yamaha DSP modes add another layer of artificial ambiance to the sound. I don't want to hear a movie at home as it sounds in a large theater, I want to hear a movie as if I was in the environment shown on the screen. Listen as the producer intended. I don't want to hear my music as if the recording was being played from speakers in a famous venue, I want to hear my music with the sound of the environment captured in the recording.

Most of the sound coming out of the Center while in a matrix surround mode is to be expected from most TV channels.
