If a smaller AWG of wire had a higher current carrying capacity (that rivaled that of higher AWG wire), would that mean you could put in more windings, thereby increasing the BL force?

No, you would increase the impedance of the speaker drastically. It is coil geometry and the pole piece that determines the impedance. So coil length, diameter and above all turns sets the impedance of the speaker.
