Anyone out there have any experience with there subs. I have there surrounds ( not that that means anything) but they are very good. Not a lot of dealers to demo them so I thought I'd ask. They are on my short list along with SVS and HSU.

VMPS made their name manufacturing full range speakers and I mean FULL range. My old VMPS towers had 2 12" woofers and a 12" passive radiator in each enclosure. I didn't use a powered subwoofer in those days. Not even remotely necessary. I have no experience with their subs so I have to stop short of recommending them but I can tell you they understand bass very well. Their speakers are an amazing value for what they are and perform with the best of them.

Exactly, VMPS speakers are kind of the sleeper company in the audio world. IMHO most subs in the 1k+ price range are probable a good performer, just comes down to which one gives you the most bang for the buck. If 25% of the cost is marketing, I'd rather pay for the speaker that puts there money in the business(sound) end instead of the marketing end. Still would like to hear from someone who actually owns one. BTW, VMPS does make some killer mains, for sure.

I have owned a VMPS "Original" since 1990. Powered by an Adcom 555 bridged to mono. This is a very smooth subwoofer. In room response is down 10db at 25hz with no room treatments. This is a 'L' shaped room ~30' on the long side, 20' on the short side with the long side about 10' at the end.

Lots of room modes. :)

VMPS subs

I have a 1991 VMPS Original that has been updated with the woven carbon fiber 12 inch Megawoofer and a new passive radiator. I am powering it with a Rotel amp bridged to 300 W. I have been very happy with it. It has no trouble filling a very large room and is fantastic with music, such as the 5.1 Eagles Hell Freezes Over DVD. It's bloody big though. I have it "hidden" behind an angled entertainment unit.

Craig Chase recently ordered and tested the ~$1,300 VMPS subwoofer and found that it did not keep up with other subs in the same price category.

At this point in time, there are subs at every price point that will do better than the VMPS. At $600-$700 the SVS PB-12 NSD is a better choice as is the AV123 MFW-15. At the $1,000 price point the Epik Castle is a better performer. And it just goes on from there.

It is also interesting that Craig's VMPS had a cabinet that was somehow not finished properly. He did not go into detail, but there was clearly something not right with the finish. VMPS is behind the times and a bit player in the subwoofer business.
