What should a poor Dawg use for protection on his computer. I have always used Norton but was wondering if there is something as good/better at less cost. It is time to renew.

Stay far away from any symantec product, they used to be good a long time ago, but now they just put out bloatware. I use Kaspersky and couldn't be happier with it.

I had used Mcafee & IE and it was slowing my system down more and more with every update. So after reading that other thread I changed to Kapersky & Firefox. WAY faster now!

Switched to mac about 3 years ago, so I haven't had to use antivirus for awhile. I do run bootcamp 1% of the time and use AVG with Zonealarm firewall and have had no problems at all with XP. I had to reinstall windows last year on a friend's pc because he had just bought the full norton suite the prior month and got a nasty virus anyway. Used AVE and ZA on his and he has had no issues since. Those are the two I recommend. For free they work amazingly well. My 2 cents.

AVG is free and works just fine.

What do you suggest in place of Norton Ghost? That program is just awesome in my experience.

Also in my experience the corporate edition is really good of symantec. It's the home edition that sucks major.

Kasperksy is a good recommendation too.

I agree with the AVG,

and I also think that the latest symantec products are a good line.

After my quest, I ended up with Norton 360 and like it. But I also have a much faster computer now, so my comparison is apples-oranges. (In other words, I'm just flapping my lips here and not offering you any real help.) I can just say that 360 appears MUCH less intrusive than my previous experiences with Norton. All scans are run during non-use times, and cease when the mouse or keyboard engages. The firewall and spam filtering are first-rate. There is also the online storage/backup system that I don't use, but that can be a useful tool.

I did the free 30-day trial.
Maybe check out the totally free version.

Then you can tell me how you like it. I'm interested if it keeps Alex from turning on your webcam. I'm kind of used to it, but it still freaks me out when I see that little red light turn on by itself.

:D

I have used a lot of different virus software including AVG, my favorite so far is AVAST. AVAST is free and updates correctly and does not bog down your system. One of the best things I think you can do to avoid viruses is to unistall internet exployer and start using firefox as your browser. Also, firefox has all kinds of cool add ons just do a search for them.

ESET NOD32 Smart Security 4

Everyone knows this is the best!:D

In addition, I also use the Outpost Firewall Pro 2009 just because.:D

AVG free edition is all we have used for years. First thing I did was remove McAffee from from our last 2 laptops. AVG and knowing how to reformat is pretty much all we need to know.

So my computer only came with trial version of MicroSoft Office. Do I have to buy the real thing or are there ways around that?

Avira Antivir is the best free Anti Virus. Been using it for a couple of years and never a problem, usually an update daily.

Check out AV-Comparatives. An Info Sec friend turned me onto it. http://www.av-comparatives.org
They perform independent testing of all the major virus scanners on a semi regular basis.
All the other virus scanners mentioned (AVG, AVAST) are OK as well. Avira, McAfee and Symentic are currently the best and have been for a while. Archived reports dating back to 2004 are also available at AV-Comparatives.

Norton use to be bloated, but the new 2009 is slim and fast, wish it was free (legally)

Good luck defending your turf.

I can't wait for the day Ethernet enabled receivers and players need virus scanners...
