Video settings on my CRT

Hi all,

Having just found out the local prices, I was all set to ask the question, "Should I spend $80 Canadian on the AVIA disc or $35 Canadian on the DVE disc?" and then I remembered a little quirk about my TV that's annoyed me for years. When I click on the menu, I get a rectangular box in the centre of the screen. This box is a darker colour than what's actually being displayed, so any adjustments I make to contrast, brightness, etc. is going to be displayed on the outer edges of the screen. This isn't really helpful, since I know the THX setups on various DVDs have the important stuff in the middle of the screen. So I was wondering if some kind soul could please help me out with these kind of settings. I'd like to calibrate the screen for movies, so I need a rough figure for each of these settings:

Picture contrast: 1 - 64
Brightness: 1 - 64
Colour saturation: 1 - 64
Hue (colour tones): 1 - 64 (increased red - increased green)
Sharpness: 1 -64 (soft - sharp)
Colour Temperature: Cool, Neutral or Warm (gives white colours a blue, neutral or red tint, respectively)
Velocity Modulation (sharpens picture definition to give objects a sharp, clean edge): High, Low or Off

The factory settings for Movie Mode are
Picture Contrast: 38
Brightness: 36
Colour saturation: 32
Hue: 16
Sharpness: 32
Colour Temperature: Warm
Velocity Modulation: Off

Thanks to anyone who can give me hand with these settings!
cheers,
supervij

Get either DVD you mentioned, I have both and I like Avia but DVE works just fine too. What you will need to do is adjust the setting and then exit the setup function to make the box go away. This requires more keystrokes to set the TV but you will get a decent result with patience.

Honestly, if I had a good HDTV, I would be getting the AVIA disc, but I've a five year old CRT (480i!), and it seems pointless to do such a fine tuned calibration on it. Just a rough guide would be sufficient, if anyone's willing to give me a hand? Pretty please? With sugar on top?

There is no simple answer to be given...sorry. The setting vary between brands and between models with in brands and that does even cover the unique lighting conditions in which each monitor is being used! However, in general the factory default settings for white level and sharpness are generally set to high…but to what extent….it varies!

Aw, shoot. Oh well, I guess it was worth a try. I suppose I'll just leave it on its default setting for movies. It's not bad at all, but I just wanted to see if I can get it a bit better.

Sigh. It seems I'm always trying to tweak SOMETHING in my quasi-HT. I think it's a sickness. In fact, I'm sure I saw in some medical journal something called Hometheatreus tweakiness: the condition whereby the patient is consumed with thoughts of adjusting his/her home theatre settings/placements to produce marginally better results.

cheers,
