Video Issue - Onkyo TX-SR806

Had receiver for 2 weeks and will consider my a/v knowledge as basic. Receiver replaced Yamaha RXV-2500 so I could get HDMI connections. I am an running HD Direct TV via HDMI thru TX-SR806 and into my Samsung LNT-4671 HD LCD. Everytime I change channels on the Direct TV it takes 7 seconds to get the HDMI signal back (TV acutally says searching for signal). I've messed w/ the settings and can't seem to fix it. The sound is awesome and the picture is too (haven't had the blue dots issue). But the wife wants the receiver to go if I can't fix it as the delay in video is unacceptable. Any ideas? If I upgrade to the 876 does this have the same issue for another $300 bucks? Shame on me to fix it by spending more. I'd like my purchased item to work correctly.

IIRC, Onkyo released a firmware that solves that problem. Check their site for details.

Please provide further

I went to the Onkyo website, to Customer Service and Firmware updates, but only saw like 3 and none for the TXSR806. Could you point me in the right direction? Thx:confused:

Likely Handshake Issue

From what I’ve read, the 806 is known to have HDMI handshake problems with certain cable/satellite receivers. From the description of your problem, it sounds like your Direct TV box maybe one of the units that the 806 does not play nice with. IIRC there is currently no firmware update to solve this problem, but I believe Onkyo may have a hardware solution that involves sending your unit to Onkyo.

If you can still return the 806 without incurring any penalties I would strongly suggest you consider finding a different receiver at this price point, either something from Denon or Yamaha or stepping up to the 876 as you mention.

In my setup I have an 876 and have not experienced any handshake issues. I don’t recall hearing or reading about any handshake flaws with the 876 either.

If you’re interested in going the 876 route you can get a new one here, shipped to your door for under a grand.

I've searched AVForuns and could not find any link to a 806 firmware update. One user had to send the unit for onkyo to fix it, although the problem was not the HDMI switch lag. Send an email to Onkyo or try to exchange the unit if you can.

I apologize if I mislead you.

I think that I have a similar problem. Anytime that anything changes the receiver changes modes and takes a bit to come back.
I did not think of it as that big of a deal because I mainly use it for DVD's as far as video goes. I am not changing channels like that. I can't imagine how upsetting that would be!

Is it possible that it is a setting issue?
I really don't want to have to ship it to them!

You should post an email to Onkyo. At least to see what they reply. I expect they'll ask for you to send them the receiver.

parndt007, yeah, that's a headache. FWIW, there were/are many who can't even get a signal to pass at all thru a receiver because of the lack of HDCP repeaters (mostly with cable).

What I usually said in those cases was to just run the HDMI, or component for that matter, directly to the display. Run SPDIF from stb to receiver. 3ft HDMI and optical is what, $15 total at Monoprice?

You can now calibrate your video to each source.

On one hand, if your wife hates that she has to pick up the TV remote to change between DVD and TV, you could pick up a URC RF20 + blaster for $80 (and now you can hide your components if you want).

OTOH, you can just play along, and say, "You are ABSOLUTELY right, honey. We MUST upgrade the receiver, no doubt about it!". :D
