vhs/dvd combo recorder questions

I was planning on getting a VHS/DVD combo recorder for my parents this x-mas. I was going to burn all of the old home movies we had as kids onto DVD's. I have done some research and have no idea as to what i should purchase. Apparently there are some compatability issues pertaining to the burned DVD's ability to play in any other devices other than the one that recorded it.
I do not need a high end device. I just need something that i can record vhs onto dvd+/-R and be able to play on multiple devices.
Does anyone have any ideas or any experience that can help me make a decision? Help would be greatly appreciated.

I've not heard of any problems wiith burned DVDs. CD's, yes, but not DVDs.

Perhaps I'm wrong, though.

I tend to like Toshiba DVD/VHS units. Cheap and effective and fairly well built for the price..

the only problem with recorded DVD compatability issues I have had, is when I don't finalize a DVD+R, if it's not finalized it won't play in other DVD players.
