typically, the larger sized woofer is recommended, but it seems a difficult choice in this situation, especially when the $30 difference is bearable for me.

its a better designed sub, and is more powerful.

btw, im assuming you've listened to them?
you should audition them first before aking decisions.

also, for the money ... yamaha subwoofers are good bang for buck, you should listen to them too. you might get a bigger driver, bigger wattage and servo technology.

I tried out couple of Yamahas in the same price range.
Was not impressed - at all. returned them.
Got one VX-10 and was blown away from the git go.

Apparently, velodyne knows better when designing subs.

regarding the DLS-3500R, none of my local audio guys have it.
I am going only by trust in velodyne at this point.

If you can swing a bit more I would reccomend the Velodyne VRP-1000, I've been very pleased with it in my HT. It does not go the lowest but is quite musical and still able to make me feel the bass in movies. This is the lowest price I found online, though I'm not familiar with the seller.

The DLSR3500R is a beast of an 8inch subwoofer.

I heard it in a 18x18 room and it filled it up to loud levels.

The only thing though, is its 500bucks where I live. If you can get it for 200, grab it, its a hell of a sub considering it has an 8 inch driver.

as regards the VRP1000, it appears that it is essentially the same as VX10 with +15W. i.e. non-digital non-corrective circuitry.

What surprises me is that the 8" DLS3500R is heavier than the 10" VX-10 (or VRP1000). What gives??

Those subs are built fairly well, thats one reason why they have a high price here. Shipping costs.

I say get the DLSR 3500R and see if you like it, make sure theres a return plan, and if you don't like it, take it back.

how did it compare with other velodyne subs. I am assuming you were in a showroom of sorts.

Very important aspect: was the sound omnidirectional or were you able to make out the direction where the sound was coming from?

it is heavier because the amp is heavier with the addition of the DSP chip and the remote control processor stuff, driver weight is pretty minimal between the two.

The box on the DLSR will make more of a difference then the amp. Those boxes are resonant free.

The DLS R series is 2/3 steps up the Velo ladder. Better box, bracing, amp, DSP/EQ and SQ. That sub retails ~ $400. I assume you're looking at the $200 closeout price for the silver models. In a small room it will like a Hsu STF1 go below it's specs with authority.

well, I have gone ahead and ordered one DLS3500R from Onecall.com

One thing I notice now, after the fact is that the VX-10 has a circular Port hole located on the rear, whereas the DLS-3500R has a rectangular port hole located on the front side, below the driver.

Apparently this is the only model within Velodyne with this design.
Is it better or worse?

apparently it is better (so they say) i think it reduces port noise.
