Velodyne VX-10 as a good budget sub?

I have a 14 x 11 foot room that opens to a Kitchen of about the same size, figure maybe 2500 cubic feet of space. My sub budget is harshly restricted right now, but I do need one. It seems as though great deals can be had on these. Anyone have thoughts on them, or another good budget powered sub in the same range?

Thanks!

I currently own this sub in a 15x19x8 (2280 cubic feet) room. For the money I think it is a good performer. I have it placed about 1/3 down a sidewall from the front of the room. The location in my room seems to be the best all around for tight bass without sacrificing extension too much. I've tried the front of the room, and corner of the room and I like best where it is now.

In my room the sub seems to roll off at around 100 hz. The integration with my bookshelf speakers is nice. In music playback the bass guitar sounds like it is coming from my bookshelves and not somewhere off to the left.

Port noise can be an issue during LFE in movies when you have it cranked up in the 90 db range. I've never noticed port noise during music playback.

It doesn't play as low as I'd like but the price is pretty good and will definitely add low end to an average pair of speakers.

I've only looked back at two subs since I've owned this one. The B&W600 which was out of my price range when I bought the VX-10, and the Onix X-sub, which came out after I purchased the VX-10. The Onix has received pretty good reviews and it's 200.00.

My best advice! Just wait and get a better sub! Most of us budget conscience guy's usually get left with a bunch of redundant a/v components untill we're completely satisfied. I wish, I had followed that plan. Now I'm in the process of saving up and doing it right:).

What is your budget?

Well, it's $1500 for the whole system, and so far it is...

$900 for a Magnepan set
$350 for the receiver that I think I may buy (Yamaha RX-V659)
and the rest for a sub and dvd player. I don't really care much about the DVD player, it won't get used much, and I could even skip it for now...

As things stand that puts my sub budget under $200...

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to check out the X-sub...

I thought of this, but I have to have some sort of sub with the Maggies, they REALLY need it...but that is why I am looking to spend so little right now, that way when I step up to a "real" sub, I'm not out too much, and it should get me by in the meantime...

I couldn't agree more. It took me a while to believe, but the sub is the most important component in my system. A high quality sub will enhance your listening experience immeasurably. Please put the sub on the top of your list of components to buy.
