Anyone ever had there ears on a pair of Richard's speakers...in particular the 2Ce SIG II & the 3A SIGNATURE? He has an interesting design philosophy that is a departure from the main stream designs for sure. They all seem to get stellar reviews. Any opinions?

It's rather a departure from mass marketed crap pardon my language. They have been around for quite a while and earned a good reputation. Time aligned drivers is not a new idea though.
I'd give them a serious listen. It's always nice to see a philosophy behind a product and Vanderstine definitely has it.
I've heard 2ce sometime ago and was quite pleased.

I have lived with a pair of 2C's in my living room for quite a while. They are excellent, full range speakers, somewhat soft on the high end but doing nothing very wrong. I don't think they are the speakers for you if you need to rock out at high volumes, but otherwise they are great. You need some serious amplification, however, because they are rather inefficient. 200 WPC would be about right.

I've heard both models you mentioned. My brother owns a pair of the 3A signatures, and they are most excellent. He considered the 2Ce signatures when he was shopping (I went along :D), but he ultimately decided that they were just a little too bass heavy for him. He felt the 3As were better balanced and could afford their extra cost.

Both models are excellent at creating an audio image. Speaker placement, as well as listener placement, for both models can be tricky to get the best imaging.

And yes, they sound dull and lifeless without plenty of power. 200 wpc works great with my brothers 3A signatures.

I have a pair of the original Vandersteen 2 speakers in the bedroom system.

Other than having to do a DIY re-foam on the low frequency driver of each, they have been trouble free and are still as satisfying a when I first brought them home.

They say the subsequent model 2 speakers are improved, but I really can't say.

By the way, I was happy to find instructions for gaining access to the drivers posted on the Vandersteen web site. The proceedure was not immediately obvious to me so the instructions probably prevented some damage.
