I have some old Vandersteen 2Cs. They are excellent speakers with a high level of listenability, balance and cleanness. While I don't really believe that good speakers should specialize in one kind of music, on the whole, I think that the 2cs are not the best rock speakers because they are rather laid back and mellow. They have lots of bottom when driven by a large amp and might not need a sub. Until it got hit by lightning, I was driving them with a 400 WPC Carver amp. On loud passages, most of the LEDs would light up. Because they are rather inefficient, I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than 200 WPC.
I've only heard more recent 2's in short visits to an audio shop but I understand that the overall sound isn't much changed, except that the new tweeter has added a more assertive top end.
