V2400 & DVD with built-in decoder...Questin

This is for you pundits out there... help me with these nagging questions.

I have a RX-V2400 and a Toshiba DVD player with a built-in digital decoder. I have a 5.1 channel hookup and I have to keep using the 'MultiCH Input' on the V2400 to watch my flicks. When the MultiCH input is turned off I was hoping to use the V2400's decoder and features (CinemaDSP, etc) to hear the audio, but it does NOT. For DTS encoded flicks I have to turn off the MultiCH Input mode to hear it, but I don't seem to get any sound from the center speaker.
a) What am I doing wrong here?

b) Does it always have to be in MultiCH Input mode when I use a DVD player with a built-in decoder? I have tried changing the audio mode from Analog to bitstream/PCM on the DVD player setting, and it still didn't work when the MultiCH was turned off.
c) Why doesn't the center speaker come on in the DTS mode?

If anyone can throw more light on this I would appreciate it. It's a pain in the rear when you can't use this awesome receiver to the fullest. Help me guys!

Thanks.

Do you have both a digital line and analog cables going to your 2400? If you are using a digital line, do you have DTS and DD enabled? Why are you using analog cables, SACD or DVD-A?

I'm assuming you have a DVD-A/SACD player. Like Ross said, you need 6 cables for your 5.1 anolog sound for DVD-A/SACD and you ALSO need a digital cable. Either Toslink (optical) or digital coax. The 6 anaolg cables are for DVD-A/SACD and the digital cable is for DTS, PLII, THX and other DSPs. When playing a DVD-A./SACD press the multi function button, when playing a DVD or CD you need to press AMP then whatever sound field you want to use (DTS, PLII, etc.).

In total, you should have 7 lines for audio hooked up, minimum. You will also need a video line like S-Video or Component.

Have you run the YPAO? This might give you some clues to your center channel problem.

Ross and Shinerman,

Thanks for your replies. Yes, to all the questions!
I'm using a regular DVD player and not a DVD-A/SACD player. I do have Toslink connected and I have 7 cables connected between my DVD player and my receiver.

As far as the connection goes I know it is correct because I can play on 5.1 without a problem when using MultiCH input, and all the speakers work fine. The problem is when I chose DTS I seem to lose out on the center channel for some reason. I don't seem to hear any audio when I don't choose MultiCH, and I am wondering if it is because I have a built-in decoder in my DVD player. Is it? Like Shinerman said, I was expecting to play my DVD or CD with any of the mode options from the receiver without going through the MultiCH input source, but for some reason it doesn't. I haven't tried PLII etc mode to see if I have a similar problem or not, and I plan to test it.

Anything else I need to check?

Thanks!

You do not need the analog cables connected to the multi-channel inputs if your dvd player doesn't decode SACD or DVD-A. They shouldn't be in the equation at all. This, in conjunction with some overlooked option setting may be confusing the 2400. Try using only the digital line and see what happens. Try and let the 2400 do all of the decoding, and only let the DVD player send it the undecoded signal. Be sure to double check your audio settings on the DVD player in regards to PCM, DTS, and DD signal assignments.

I have analog and digital cables going from the DVD player to the receiver for some wierd reason... and that might be causing the problem? I know the V2400 prioritizes the signals. I guess I'll remove the analog ones and see how it works with just the digital cable in there... duh!
Will find out shortly..

Thx.

Yep, that should do it. The analog connections are probably confusing the receiver. Once removed, you should be fine.

Ross, I sent my previous email even before seeing your reply. You read my mind.
I think that is the problem. Will do it and let you know. Thanks a bunch!
