using stereo with tv

I'm considering a rotel rx 1052 to pair with a set of sierra 1 speakers. I might want to go surround at a later date. The rotel has zones which I need for patio speakers. I am assuming that for tv sound this set up would be fine. Are there any drawbaks other than the surround sound with movies. I dont do any gaming. Music is my first priority. Can I use this unit later in some way if i go surround? maybe as an amp? One problem this unit solves is that it will go inside my existing cabinet. The Rotel is only 13 inches long. It should be a killer combo with the sierras. I looked at the rotel multichannel receivers, but they seem to lack some of the new features. thanks

I have the same Rotel and love it. I use it for music only, from cd's or my ipod. I've hooked it my tv a few times just to see how it sounds and if I had a big tv I'm sure I would leave it that way but the sound makes my 30"er feel so small.

I'm not sure if you'll want to use it as an amp later on but you'll more then likely keep it around for the multi zone features. You'll love the sound and quality of it. Just remember that there are no digital hook ups.

The Rotel also has only composite video inputs but doubtless you will just use the receiver for sound and connect the satellite and dvd player directly to the TV. This should be a nice driver for your Sierras as all reviews that I have seen complemented the musical nature of the receiver.

Give some consideration of going to a power amplifier or mono blocks with an eye to your future plan of HT. Then you would only need a three channel amp and a processor. Good used amps are plentiful on e-bay and there are many good pre-amps available at reasonable cost (Rotel has or used to have a nice one for $500 or so).

However, in consideration of your two zone desire the Rotel should work well.

Thanks guys........Mudshark, since I started this thread Ive been doing some more reading and from what I can tell these speakers will love power.
This makes your suggestion of a power amp seem like the way to go. I use direct Tv HD. I have a Samsung TV with the HDMI ports on it. I'm assuming I need the HDMI ports on the receiver or processor. The Emotiva line has some interesting products. I want some clean sound. Do you have any specific recommendations? I'll go back and look over your previous messages. I've decided to move furniture, so size isnt the important consideration any more.....just sound. I could always just by the receiver, but I'm trying to get one step ahead of upgrade fever!

Mudshark...OH! just reread your post. so you are saying that if I didnt need surround sound that I could run the sound from the tv into the receiver...I get it. I'm slow, still figuring all this out. thanks.
