using old stereo equip with computer?

I have heard about people using older stereo receivers (or do I just need an amp?) and speakers, and hooking them up to their computer to have better sound for Pandora, CD, mixing audio.

I have an iMAC. Should I just purchase a simple y connector, and go through the headphone input on my Mac and AUX on the receiver.

Also any recommendations for very smalls amps, I guess that is all I really need to drive the speakers.

Virtually any stereo receiver/integrated amp and speakers can be driven from a computer. Simply use the headphone output or some sound cards offer a "line output" which is independent of the 'puters volume control.

A lot depends on what you want to spend but a vintage stereo from garage sales, swap meets, of a friend/relatives attic can work splendidly. Likewise for speakers.

I was send a 2ch amp by accident a year ago and it became my computer amp. Markw is right, just use the headphone or line out/in
