using computer to play music

I am planning on getting a new audio system for my room. I plan on getting a new receiver and either two 3 way speakers or two speakers and a sub to start with.
I plan on hooking up my computer to my reciever so i can just play the music on my computer instead of using individual cd's.
I am concerned that i may turn the volume up to much on my computer which will result in sending a clipped signal to my receiver which could end up damaging my speakers.

So I wanted to ask if there is something out there which will allow me to view the level of the output signal, therefore I can adjust the volume without the fear of turning it up to much?

Thanks.

My computer is hooked on my amp via a basic Y-adaptor (mini-jack to RCA) and my WINDOWS volume level is constantly in the mid position. Never had a volume problems that way.

I have my computer hooked up to my stereo, The computer volume is usually between half to max. Usually around 3/4. Havent had any problems. I have a creative audigy 2 soundcard. If the computer is having problems you'll be able to hear it.

I also boost my soundcard output with a headphone amplifier that I am using as a preamp which is always turned up all the way. depending on your soundcard you may also have a digital output, which would be the best route if you could go it.
