I needed a new sub cable, but had a few component cables kicking around. Is that ok to use?

Sure. Why not? What are your reservations?

not sure..component is a video cable and I am using it for audio? Maybe I am just a victom of marketing....so all 75 ohm cables are the same, with different packaging?

Component video cables may be specially designed to carry video frequencies, but I can't for the life of me think of a reason you couldn't use it as a subwoofer cable. If you are making your own cables, you can buy one kind of coaxial cable for both audio and video (all frequencies). I think flexibility in the cable is more of a consideration than anything.

Anyway, I say go for it. You aren't going to hurt anything.

No, they aren't specially designed, but it is a fair question.

Yes, 75 ohm cables are 75 ohm cables.

Here are some wonderful uses for 75 ohm cables...

1. Carry cable from the street to your home.
2. Carry cable in your home to cable boxes and TVs
3. Carry composite video
4. Carry s-video (2 75 ohm cables)
5. Carry component video (3 75 ohm cables)
6. Carry computer video (RGBHV - 5 75 ohm cables)
7. Carry subwoofer audio
8. Carry analog stereo audio (2 75 ohm cables)
9. Carry digital coaxial audio

I'm probably missing something, but that is the most common uses that popped into my head for what decent, 75 ohm cable(s) can be used for.

Yes, the marketeers are skilled at parting your $$ from you. This is just another example in audio. That 75 ohm cable is very versatile as was shown bmx.

Cable quality

Also note, the quality of the 75 ohm cable is much more critical for high bandwidth video applications then for relative low bandwith audio applications like line level audio or subwoofer connections.
