Funny you should mention this. Just tonight I used the USB input on the front my Oppo 970HD for the first time! I've owned it for several years
The CD/DVD as a medium will very soon be one of those "remember these?" items

Check out the Maverick Audio TubeMagic D1. USB DAC, pre w/optional tube buffer stage. I've got the $219 model, with upgraded tube. I'm very happy with the sound quality. Price can't be beat.

As for the Vincent, it is a little more than I want to spend, but the Maverick unit looks REALLY interesting.

I don't think so. I'm coming from PC via USB. So I am playing files on PC with foobar and Maverick just receives USB signal. I suppose if you can "play" the files directly from any USB device the Maverick would process them, but that takes more than an external drive full of music. Sounds like the Vincent unit can do just that, which is a pretty cool feature.
