Hey. Wasn't sure where to post this........some of you seem pretty competent when it comes to the computer end of things.

I was given a Canon DVD camcorder, model DC100, by a client as a gift/tip. I was hoping to use it for brief movies uploaded to you tube. I wanted to upload a movie of my new speakers and diy room treatments. The movie is recorded fine, and plays on my Denon 3910. I went to play it on my PC, and had to upload a codec to get the dvdr minidisc to play. Fine, and it plays on my Windows Media Player v.9 just fine. I want to save the movie so I can upload it to youtube, or edit it in Windows Movie Maker. When it sits in the WMP it is a wmv. file and that isn't accepted anywhere as a valid format. OK. So I google ripping a dvd and try some freeware - DVD Decrypter. Sigh. So I use that to rip my minidisc to the hard drive and appearantly it does.
(File = Video_TS)There is a folder with some files in it, but when I go to you tube, click browse, and hilite the file, it doesn't do anything.......as if it is an invalid file or summat.

My Canon powershot cameras have usb connectability and I was kind of upset this digi cam didn't - it has a 3.5 mm out. The cable that comes with it is the 3.5out to 3 rca's red yellow and white. A person at BB said there is no 3.5mm to usb cable........which might let me go directly to hard drive?
I am pulling my hair out as I really want to show you fellas my new Canton's and DIY room treatments.:confused::eek:
Any help or suggestions would really help!:)

So if I understand correctly, the camcorder records to a mini dvd-r in WMV format but YouTube doesn't accept WMV?

If the disc is really just a data disc with WMV files on it you should be able to see the contents of the disc just by opening Windows Explorer to your DVD drive or get a command prompt (easy way: Start->Run-> type cmd) and just type 'dir d:' (or whatever drive letter is the dvd drive). If you see a list of *.wmv files then it is a data disc and all you have to do is copy the file you want to the hard drive.

If it really is recorded in DVD format then you have a lot more work to do. You'd need to transcode it to a different video format. I suspect that it really is just a data disc with WMV files but I could be wrong. WMP does not come with a DVD codec by default so if it played fine in WMP it was not in DVD format.

Here is what I got when I typed in the command prompt box per your directions.

Volume in Drive D is Canon DVD
Volume Serial Number is A798-3552
Directory of D:\
12/31/2005 10:00 AM <DIR> VIDEO_TS
0 File(s) 0 bytes
1 Dir(s) 0 bytes free

The dvd r disc did not play in Windows media. I had to download a codec.
VIDEO_TS is the dvd decrypter I downloaded to decrypt the dvd r.
in the Canon DVD VIDEO_TS folder there are nine files...... they end in IFO, VOB, and BUP.
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the help. :)

Found this on Cnet,

If you choose to initialise a disc for playing in a standalone player, the camcorder writes standard VOB files; if you initialise for future editability, it records in the VRO format. Windows Media Player can play the latter if you rename the file with an MPG extension, however the aspect-ratio information gets lost -- that info is encoded into a separate file -- so 16:9 video will get squashed into 4:3. Because you must plug into an outlet in order to finalise a disc, the DC100 is probably not the best choice for outdoor vacations.

So, I've been digging deeper. There is a whole cottage industry of dvd ripping going on out there. Mostly to record dvd movies to a hard drive. I just want to put little five minute snippets on you tube......but I guess the process is the same.......appearantly I am close to succeding by getting the dvd files into a folder. Now I need more software to change from the current file name to an mpeg or avi. My computer is on the end of it's life cycle and doesn't want more software and uploads........:(
