Thank you for your suggestions. How far away from the walls would electrostats generally need to be placed?
It is best to look at the recommendations for specific models that you are considering. You can look at the manuals for Martin Logan speakers at:

MartinLogan® | Premium HiFi Speakers for Home Theater & Stereo

In the manuals, you will find recommendations for the placement of the specific model. This is by far the best way to consider this, as different models of speakers have different requirements.

If you can find a dealer for them, I recommend considering a different but similar concept (these are also flat panel speakers, but they are not electrostatic):

Stereo Speakers, Home Theater Speakers, High Fidelity Audio - Magnepan, Inc.

I personally have always preferred Magnepan over Martin Logan, but obviously some people feel the opposite way.

Other brands I would consider include BG Radia in-wall speakers, Atlantic Technology, and Phase Technology.

It varies. You'll have to experiment and find where they sound best to you. As Pyrrho said, contact the manufacturers and use their guidelines as a starting point. Then make adjustments until you're satisfied with the sound.
