It's easier to find a buddy to bring over his speakers vs. unhooking his amp

so that's what I meant by that. I guess I am still in denial or shock... Didn't see that one coming...
Ok, that answer I can understand. You're right about being easier less cables to plug and all. But this won't tell the whole story, since speakers have diff. load characteristics it will almost certainly change the sound, for better or worse.
I don't think your Sony Receiver is up for the task of powering those Monitor 7's, look at the specs carefully. They will take up to 130 wpc of per channel.
Most of the time, Sony rates the power/distortion @ 1khz only, not the whole spectrum, I am wondering what kind of distortion you are experiencing if you playing you're unit at higher power output levels, this could also be a reason why you say it doesn't sound good....
This is will probably take some experimenting to get it all sorted out. Whatever you do, do it systematically in a logical methodical way. Example, Change one thing at a time, try to observe/hear for changes and return to a prior config to confirm the diff. etc. No hard rules, just do it in a fashion that suits you.
Good Luck
