your speakers have a lower sensitivity 88db1w1m, with a "rated" 8 ohm impedence. If you have a fairly large room, imo i would up grade to more than the rated 110wpc jvc.

I would recommend the Yamaha or the Pioneer. What are all the different models you are looking at? That will give a better idea on comparing the models.

Do you hear any obvious problems such as amplifier clipping/distortion during use(this can show up as a harshness in higher SPLs if running right at the edge, if not downright distortion)? If not, I doubt you would benefit from upgrading the amplifier. Now, I will say, it may be that these speakers are not driven as well as they theoretically could be, since they likely present a 4 ohm load across much of the mid-bass and bass range, and it seems unlikely the JVC was intended for 4 ohm loads(please check the JVC's manual to verify). I know the speakers claim 8 ohms, but typically, that is a false claim on speakers with double mid-bass drivers. However, not many recievers are designed to handle 4 ohm speaker loads, even if you do want to 'upgrade' this particular aspect. The best option is usually to use a receiver with pre-outs and use external amplifiers. This also allows the future option of inserting powerful sound processors between the pre-outs and amplifiers to allow superior sound quality in future application(s), providing far greater speaker flexibility. Also, if you need HDMI support, you would want to replace the receiver, as the one you have does not appear to have HDMI support.

i am missing alot of low end bass during softer movies. and also the sub if left in standby mode wont come out during movies with not much music.
(i can over ride this by turning off standby, but i think i shouldnt have to.)
one amp i can get for approx $100 more than the jvc, is the pioneer vsx-917.
its 7 ch with hdmi etc, 90wt pr ch. i dont need 7.1 so maybe i should just go for a mid range 5.1ch??, i just want to make sure that my speakers are getting the power they deserve. cheers

Is your sub hooked up with an RCA cable to a subwoofer pre-out jack? If so, then try to increase the subwoofer output level on your receiver/amp, but decrease the volume knob on the subwoofer itself. If the signal being sent from the receiver is too low, the auto-sensor on the sub won't catch it and turn on - so, boosting that signal can help with that. However, when you boost that signal, then you want to turn the gain (volume) down on the subwoofer's amp so that you keep the overall subwoofer volume the same.

Well, perhaps when you have soft movies, the level of the LFE is also just as soft and you will miss it as the ear sensitivity is not the same as the mid bands. Or, the sub's auto feature is not set up properly. I dislike auto feature on a sub.
Or, you need a better sub?
