upconversion dvd player

I love this site!!!!!!
any one know if there are any modestly priced dvd players that upconvert via component video? will using this upconverted signal to my projector be a noticeable difference?

I think you can only upconvert with hdmi... not for sure tho. Plus some peeps actually think upconverting does nothing. I'm still pondering...

By default they both only upconvert over HDMI, but you can press a sequence of 5 or 6 keys on the remote to unlock them to Region-Free and allow them to upconvert over Component also. I did this on my DVD-HD950, it took about 25 seconds and worked perfectly.

DVD's are 480i. An upconverting/upscaling player simply fills in lines or fits the picture perfectly to the screen, but will never make a 480i disc true 1080i or 720p. You'll have to wait for HD-DVD or Blu-ray for true HD quality dvd.

You will see a difference in pq with an Oppo or Neuneo player over a budget $50 Walmart player. I wouldn't recommend spending too much more though, since the new technology is here and now. The high end Denon and Pioneer Elite dvd players cue much faster, has the best 480i picture available, and some say have better sound. Just be prepared to pay out the nose for these players.

Buckeye, given that you are correct and the source isn;t in HD, have you seen any of the upconverted players in action on an HDTV? Is there a difference (positive or negative) in the image that you've seen? Does it deal with changing the format to full screen without distortion or does it still have side bars/letterboxing?

I have seen many (Samsung, LG, Sony,Tosh) upconvert dvd players on every type of HDTV (projos, lcd, pdp, crt). They are not worth it.

I hooked one of the Samsung up-convert players to a Samsung 67" DLP and a Sony 60" SXRD, sitting side by side. One of them is getting the upconvert, and one of them is not. Granted, they have differences in color, but I can't tell a difference in resolution, which is what the up-convert is supposedly changing. Also, I asked customers to tell me which tv they thought was getting the up-convert and I'd say 4 out of 5 picked the one using component video (480p).

The Oppo looks great on 1080i, but only does so through its DVI out. On Secrets its video rating blew away almost every other player made other than a Denon unit that costs several thousand dollars.

For the price ($200), it is definitely worth the bucks until the format war is settled at least in part.

Just to clarify, that is based on their limited testing. The Oppo is in no way comparible to the Denon DVD-2910 (as a whole package) let alone the 5910. It's like comparing 0-60 times and handling prowess of a Corvette Z06 vs a Kia Sophia in a driveway.

We tested the Oppo and found it to be an average player and an above average value, but with some major deficiencies. OTOH, in our experience, Oppo has incredibly good customer service and address issues promptly when they are brought up.

Also, it depends on the scaler of the TV. Keep in mind that in most cases your TV is upconverting the 480i/p signal anyway.

If your TV has a good scaler equal to or better than the upconverting players, then you may notice no difference. If you have a poor scaler in your TV, you may notice a slight to siginicant difference.
