Up-Converting DVD Player Help

Greetings – Here’s the dilemma for which I need options – I recently purchased a Toshiba DLP Set – 62MX196. My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V2500 (One generation before HDMI integration). I want to upgrade my Older DVD player from a current 5 disc, Progressive Scan Panasonic – I can’t recall the model specifically - Maybe DVD-F85, I believe. This player doesn’t perform very well on the Toshiba, using component and optical connections via the Yamaha. I, like many others, have decided to wait to upgrade to the new format that wins the battle Blu-Ray or HD-DVD – I’m not willing to spend the $$ on a bet in that I’m old enough to have lived through the Beta / VHS wars AND the Laser Disc debacle. (Anybody looking for discs and players?) So, as an interim, I’m considering going the up-converting route but not spend the $$ on the 1st class Denon unit. So the questions – based on the above scenario and set-up what is the recommendation (Note: I can connect via HDMI to the TV and route audio, coax or optical, thu the Yamaha) in order to take the best possible advantage of a great TV? And, what is the difference between “Progressive Scan” and Up-Converting to 1080, etc. Thanks in advance!

Im going to wait to spend the big bucks on a HD player myself so i got a Samsung dvd player that upconverts to 1080i.
I really wanted the LG only because it was cooler looking but they where out.
Well anyways you can get a single dvd player for about $99.
The HDMI cable will probaly cost you more lol.

Order an Oppo for $150...it comes with the HDMI cable. As a bonus, you'll also be able to play DVD-A and SACD. Nice little player....great PQ.

Thanks for the posts, advice and input. It appears from different posts and reviews that the Oppo unit is the way to go. Their latest offering, DV981HD is $80.00 more than their $150.00 unit (DV970HD) however, the newest incorporates the Faroudja chipsets / technology. Some quick research suggests that when using a larger screen TV (>50”) that the Faroudja based units are better choice. Apparently the Oppo unit is so new that there are no reviews as of yet. Any other comments and suggestion is appreciated.

I use the Oppo 971 on my 720p plasma and it's really astounding.

As jcPanny indicated, the new Oppo 981 upconverts right to 1080p. That player has to, by far, be the best value going in home theater.

The $200 971 and $250 981 apparently have much better video quality than the $150 970 thanks to the Faroujda chipsets they employ.

Amazon has the 981 for $230, and you could sign up for their credit card and get it for $200, then pay it off early and cut up the card.

Oh and if you are a prime member, you get free 2-3 day shipping.

Oppo 981

I have had the Oppo 981 about three weeks now, have it mated to a Sony 46" XBR2 LCD, and am still being stunned daily in its ability to upconvert my DVD collection to *1080p*. This includes my latest and greatest discs as well as classic black and whites. I'm not yet ready to make the jump to Bluray/HD-DVD, and I decided to be an early adopter on this unit based on all of the great reviews of the previous players, specifically the 971, as well as Oppo's great service and response to suggestions for improvement. I couldn't be more pleased. I also bought direct from Oppo as they had it in stock, and shipment was quick.

Good luck!

http://www.oppodigital.com/ has tons of detailed technical info as well as links to reviews and so forth. Audioholics has also reviewed the 971 and 970. Just look in the review section. Amazon.com sells them as well. Shouldn't be too hard to get one sent to Canada.
