Unopenable DVDs Must DIE DIE DIE!!!!

I want to know who the companies are who make those unopenable plastic Audio DVD cases that have the "PRESS" text imprinted on the sides. I want to know because I want to write an article boycotting those freaking DVDs.

Every distribution house that sells them should send an apology out to everyone who owns them and give them a new case.

Is it just me or is this the most frustrating thing in the world. I got so mad today trying to open up a Seal IV DVD that I ripped off the front of the case (which of course gave way well before the "PRESS" release even though I was applying about 450# of pressure to it.) I've tried varying the pressure, I've tried different finger positions... Sometimes it would open with a small, gentle click with almost no pressure at all - but if I reclosed it to try again I could not seem to repeat the process for about another 10 minutes of trying.

This can't be just me, can it?

It's not just you, but let's also add the plastic tape they put on every side of the dvd - there is one on the top, bottom, and the side. Then the entire thing is shrink wrapped too. After you spend 15 minutes trying to carefully pry off of those stickers, you get to the hermetically sealed case itself which can be a chore to open.

CDs annoy me with that crap too. They should ship them with an additional clean jewel case because by the time you get through all that packaging tape, the jewel case is damaged anyway.

I'm with you on the stickers....just when I think I've got it down and extra nasty one pops up. What are these "press" cases you're referring to Guess I haven't come across one yet with my limited DVD-A collection.

Yep, those things suck. My Queensryche "Empire" DVD-A is almost impossible to open. I have actually found that a very light touch seems to work the best. But not always. Sometimes you have the resort to brute force and even then they might not open.

Very frustrating.

I have razor blades specific for opening these pesky CD and DVD cases up, I'll start on one corner of the edge and slice along the seam cutting the outside wrapper along with plastic 'tape' all the way around the three side of the case with the seams. Seems like it's much easier to peel away the sticky tape this way rather than trying to peel it all in one piece.

I have a bazooka that I also keep handy for the day that I meet one of the ding dongs who suggested for 'Security Reasons' the CD and DVD cases needs to be wrapped in such a manner. What the heck is up with that label 'Security Device Enclosed' label on the plastic tape anyway??

Just today I was looking at all of the 'damaged from opening' cd cases I have, way too many from just trying to get the things opened.

Stress cases

I have had the EXACT same experience with these, and also found the light touch to work most frequently, but again not always. The "Press" text should read "Stress" instead, since it is more accurate both physically and mentally when opening these things.

LMAO , I totally agree. Being a avid movie dvd collector, regular dvd's not music, have 2 of these unnecessarily needed tabs. And I feel the plastic is hard enough to get off . And then they add more problems????

This is certainly one of things you must say, What were they thinking ????

I'm sure they are thinking that if you make it impossible to open in the store, it will prevent theft. Of course it's impossible to open when you get it home, so legitimate purchasers suffer more than than the few thieves that would try to steal the disc while in the store.

I'd rather have DVDs behind a glass case in a store than have to fight multiple stickers when I get home....Well, maybe not? I buy most of my DVDs from Columbia House. Theft shouldn't even be a problem in this setting. I hate haveing to peel off three stickers, one of which inevitably rips the top or bottom part of the DVD cover off, then taking Goo-Gone to remove the sticky residue so all my movies aren't stuck together in one massive blob. I don't know what the solution is, but stickers is not the way to go. How hard would it be for someone to simply take a knife and slice through the stickers?

ALL cds, dvds are far too difficult to open. The security tag inside the mdse. should be more than sufficient to discourage shoplifters. Unfortunately, it isn't the case always. A favorite tactic is to stuff it (under the clothing) and dash out the door. Most store clerks, for safety reasons, just ain't gonna give chase and the thieves know it. So putting tape, tape and more tape, all over the case doesn't stop the stealing, and serves primarily to hinder and aggravate the folks that have shelled out their hard earned dollars to purchase the mdse. So puleeze, manufacturers, listen up and stop the insanity!

I have found one type of DVD case that I really, really like. I've tried to attach a picture that demonstrates how it works. Basically, it's a button in the center that, once pressed, stays open. When you place the DVD back in its place, it folds two little "holders" out over the center edge of the DVD keeping it in its place. No force is required for either action. The DVD case came wrapped in cellophane, but no stickers. Hurray !

Unfortunately, this is the only movie I own that uses such a system...

you need to buy the special tool to open them they sell them extra. 29.95 for one.

plus shipping is a craftsman screw driver and hammer. works every time hehehehe.

Peanut butter! Seriously, a teeny tiny bit on a paper towel, a little rubbing, and you're set!

FWIW, I recommend the creamy stuff. The crunchy can be a little hard to work with.

By the way... I calmed down and found that I have several of these cases - some that open easily and others that do not. The Seal IV one was an oddball that seemed to be worse than most.

The first time I opened my Metallica DVD-A, I snapped the front cover right off. It broke in 3 pieces. I totally agree, these cases really suck. I have looked for a replacement but nobody sells just the case.

Anyways, kind of senseless to get worked up about it because DVD-A will unfortunately be extinct soon.
