(URC) has unveiled a fresh new design for its Internet Web site with streamlined content for consumers and professional audiences, plus a special password-protected area called the "URC Control Room" for dealers and custom installers. The new, improved site, www.universalremote.com, has been designed, in particular, to help consumers more easily determine which URC remote best meets their needs, and to better provide URC´s professional communities with the information and services that will help them save time and increase profits.

What about the DIY crowd

How do we get access to the info so we can customize our remotes?

This change does not look good for the home theater enthusiast. I decided on a Universal Remote Control due to the fact I could easily program it to fit with my ever changing home theater. Now it looks like the company wants me to pay someone to do something that I can do for myself. Unfortunate.

I like the design of the new site because it is much better organized now, but I disagree with the notion that it now makes it easier for consumers to determine which remote suits their need.

There are no comparison charts between the various models and it looks like they have even more overlap between models than ever before. Eg, there are now RF20 and RF30 remotes which apart from color look identical to the MX-350 and MX-650. You still have to read the manual for each to determine the differences and on a casual read thru them I can't see any difference between RF20 and MX-350!

I actually have a client who purchased an MX-850, when they asked for programming help, I was unable to get the software at all. It IS possible to get the software, but you have to register your product with them, then the download becomes available.

Yet, since I didn't purchase the product, I don't have any access at all, and when I called them, they let me know that they couldn't help me at all.

At some point I imagine that places like Remote Central will have some people that can hook others up with the programming software rather easily. But, if you have bought a remote, it should be easy enough to get the software online. Unfortunately, it does seem like the link to allow that to occur is no longer available on the URC website. Meh - bad form on them.

The website does say you can register your product and have access to a version of the software. But, it says the version available for the end consumer does not include the "Live Update" function.

In addtion, what if you purchase a used remote off of eBay? One that has been registered and/or one that has not been registered? I wonder how that will work?

I agree with BMXTRIX, bad form indeed.
