Actually we don't think the HDMI chip on PS3 is even fully 1.3 compliant (to the max extent of the spec)despite what Sony claims and we are trying to confirm this. Stay tuned...

Fantastic article! Simple and to the point. There is no need to regret the purchase of a display that sports HDMI version 1.1! I am not even sure there are any displays that support 1.3 yet anyway.

I just ordered an Oppo 981 DVD player that has an HDMI v. 1.1. I also just purchsed a Samsung LCD display and plan to connect both with HDMI. I have read that HDMI version 1.1 was introduced in 2004--does this mean that the Samsung is using the version 1.1, or are they still being constructed with a 1.0?

If the player outputs version 1.1, but the display only receives 1.0, I am not going to get any audio via HDMI, just video, correct? I'm a little worried because I want the video and audio to both go throuh HDMI.

Is he talking about the cable or HDMI 1.1 devices?

If he is talking about HDMI 1.1 devices, why do none (that I am aware of) support 1080p? Example, I have a Yamaha RX-V2600 AVR. It supports HDMI 1.1. It does not support pass-through of 1080p. That functionality did not come until the Yamaha RX-V2700 which supports HDMI 1.2a. The same can be said about Pioneer and Denon.

If it is a matter of that HDMI 1.1 spec supported 1080p but the manufactures chose not to implement it, any speculation as to why not?

It's a matter of time and cost and likely at the time the receiver was released 1080p was not widely used and therefore they chose not to allocate resources to implementing 1080p pass-thru.

Some cable boxes STILL don't pass the audio over HDMI.

I'm a confused about the audio side. This Dolby True HD & DTS-HD as well as lossless audio. From the article...

- All versions of HDMI can transport uncompressed audio.

- You don't need 1.3 if your HD or Blu-ray player can decode the lossless into uncompressed audio.

My questions:
Can any of the current lines of HT receivers handle this uncompressed audio?

Can the current line of HD players send out this uncompressed audio?

Do the optical and digital coax outputs become obsolete?
Can the player output this lossless only on HDMI?

I don't think you right. Denon AVR 4306 which I have (HDMI 1.1 compliant) CAN pass 1080p So I can use it for (future) HD-DVD/Blue Ray player, when I finaly decide to pull the trigger.
I think the same goes for AVR 4806CI and 5805MK2.

I don't think so, according to other articles which you can find by simply google'ing "HDMI 1.3". Among them - this one:

Also, the HDMI 1.3 outputs of Sherwood receiver (see:Gene's picture) seem to look the same as HDMI 1.1s on my Denon.

BTW, I know for a fact (which was confirmed today by Denon's rep) that the current Denon receivers (HDMI 1.1) will NOT be firmware-upgradable to HDMI 1.3 !!!
It's a matter of hardware, and I thought I would mention it, since a lot of hopefull owners (like myself) were asking about it on different threads

My Anthem D2 is HDMI 1.1, and I'm using 1080p48 and 1080p60 with it without any problems. 1080p24 in (yep, it does accept 1080p24 in) and 1080p24/60 out without a glitch...

Also. My new Toshiba HD-XA2 can decode DTS-HD internally and send it to any receiver or pre/pro with HDMI 1.1 connectors.

All the Blu-ray titles should soon be encoded with "Advanced Content", and then the decoding MUST be done IN the player. The Blu-ray titles are now encoded in "Basic content" only because Sony was not ready to go interactive... But be sure that all those titles will have a second re-issue with the "improved" advanced content...

But since all the HD-DVD titles are now encoded in Advanced content (with mandatory decoding IN the players... you can't send anything not decoded to a receiver if it's in Advanced Content...), then Blu-ray will have to follow... Or else they will do less then HD-DVD (because of the lack of Advanced Content).

Also. Deep Color is not supported by Blu-ray or HD-DVD (they are limited to 8 bits).

So HDMI 1.3 is useless.
