Ultra Discs in CD-R

I have a 24 K gold 'plated' over plastic set of 2 in the "The Wall" from Pink Floyd, are you sure they are made of 24 K gold?

Thanks for the link, very interesting. I'm a little bit skeptical of the value of the discs, though- just what is their "patented dye"? Sure, cyanine or Azo dyes do fade with time, but Thalocyanine dye (used by Mitsui) can last several centuries. Are they saying they've come up with yet another dye, or are they just liscencing thalocyanine dyes for their own use? If the latter, why should I pay $3 for one of their Gold discs when I can buy a proven Gold disc from Mitsui for about $1? Mitsui is the only disc used by the US Library of Congress as well as numerous other prominent libraries.

That said, I may have to investigate them further.

As an aside, I wish the original redbook standard has called for a gold foil layer from the beginning. The cost wouldn't have been all that probitive- one Troy ounce of gold can be hammered out to cover an entire football field! Gold can be worked to just a few molecules in thickness, so a very minute amount would be necessary to make a disc. The pinholing & rot we now see in some older discs would have been effectively prevented. Oh, well.

Ultradisc CDRs

Just got a 25 pack on the spindle - thought they came with lift locks - they did not. I'm using them to make 1 -1 copies of my fave Ultradisc IIs. The packaging is really cool!

The copy doesn't make it clear, but I believe if you buy them individually or in smaller quantities they do come in lift lock boxes- the 25 ct spindle pack is cheaper, though.

I'm anxious to hear how they work for you.

I'm suprised to see MFSL as they went out of business like in 98 or 99. I guess they think $3 blanks are more likely to sell than $30 CD's. The only thing that really made MFSL discs better to me was the remixes they would add. I only have a Tears For Fears (Songs From The Big Chair) MFSL CD.


Then again poeple always complain about Laserdiscs rotting away, and all of mine are fine.

MFSL has been restructured and resurrected- they've back in business for at least a year now. Maybe longer.

Actually, I have several MoFi discs. And most of them were well worth the money. My statement about the Mitsui disc stems from the fact that virtually every expert on digital recording considers Mitsui media to be the finest in the world. Perhaps the MoFi discs are as good or better, but MAM has a tremendous track record and is the standard CD-R of many prestigious libraries and govt agencies because their performance is proven. You could say their media is the "Gold Standard" for CD-Rs.

I'm still curious if the Pthalocycanine dye they use is the same dye now being used by MoFi. The latter mentions a "patented dye", but they never once claim the patent is theirs...

As far as rotting goes, I can't speak to the issue of LD rot, but I've seen CD rot many times. As far as I know, no gold CD or CD-R could rot like that. With a gold CD-R, the main issues would have to be the long term viability of the dye and the actual polycarbonate substrate (although I'm aware of CD-Rs manufactured with other materials than polycarbonate).

mfsl lift lock cases (package of 200)

Hi,

i once bought a package of 200 new lift lock cases from offbeat records. There are/were two offbeat records companies. One was a manufacturer and the other one was a record shop. ( I bought it directly from the manufacturer)
I dont find the contact info for the manufacturer any more. Does anybody know the address of offbeat records or can anybody tell me where i can buy a package of 200 new lift lock cases?
