Two digital audios into one input?

My orignal thread in another room evolved into these questions. I should have asked them here. So here they are:
I am not willing to spend $1000 on a HD TiVo receiver with directv. So, I planned on connecting my standard DVR 40 (TiVo) receiver and directv's HD receiver to the same TV.
My issue is that my DVD digital coax out goes to the coax input of my A/V receiver. My standard TiVo receiver's optical audio out is into my A/V receiver's optical in.
I will want to connect my digital audio from my HD receiver to my A/V. What is the simplest way? Splitter? Should I split the coax or optical? Would there be any issues with my A/V having the split signal inputed into the same digital input?
Thanks for all and any help.
