I have an old sony stereo system bought back in I think around 1996. It seems to be working fine but the speakers are tweeking out. The tweeters are crackling when I play cds. But when I listen to the radio it's crystal clear. what do you guys think the problem is? Something wrong with the cd player?

It is the CD p[layer, you are exceeding the error correction of the player. First thing to do is clean the laser lens. That will likely correct the problem.

Its a mhc-2600 dating back to 1991. I am really surprised it's been working all this time . Has been a really good stereo to me.

An old receiver like that probably has potentiometers for volume and tone controls, and possibly a mechanical rotary input selector. If so, these can become dirty with age and cause noise or distortion. To check give them a wiggle and see if you get any audible noise – scratchy or crackling sounds.

Read the OP's post and don't confuse him. His radio is fine, and the pots are in use playing the radio as well. This is classical digital data error what he is describing.

Try one of these if it's a front loading cd player

or you can use alcohol and a q-tip if it's a top loader.

I've also noticed it takes a little while for it to realize there's a cd in there it'll spin but to recognize the tracks it takes a few seconds. This is probably the laser too right? i can hear a little clicking noise or something if i put my ear next to the spinning disc.

If it's not reading the table of contents (TOC), it could be dirty or a weak laser. It's 18 years old and they don't last forever.
