TV turns off sometimes as I change receiver modes

My TV is an Olevia 32" lcd. My receiver is HK 146. Sometimes when I turn on a device that is hooked up to the receiver, or change sources on the receiver, the TV turns off.

Any ideas what the heck is going on here?

This is a long shot and may have nothing to do with this, but did you plug your TV into the back of the receiver by any chance?

No...my receiver does not have an outlet on the back.

You have conflicting IR codes. It's not uncommon when different brands are within eyeshot of the remote that some control codes do different things on different devices. It would appear that the code that switches modes on the receiver is the same as that which turns the TV off. Can't think of a solution for that.


Now, if you say when you don't use the remote, I'm stumped. Poltergeists?

That is indeed a curious situation. Is either the TV or AVR new to the setup? Was this happening from day one or something that just came up? Is it random or very reproducable?

If it is random, open up the plug point and make sure all electricals are secure behind the plug point. (Needless to say, do this only if you are comfortable working on the electricals and always turn off the circuit before manipulating the the wiring) Then, try replacing the power cord for good measure. Could be a loose contact.

I too am shooting in the dark, it is possible that the power board in the TV is the cause. Maybe the voltage dip ever time you turn on a device causes something on the power board to turn the TV off. Run an extension cord from a plug point on a different circuit to power the TV. See if the problem still occurs.

The AVR is new and this seems to be random. Next time it happens I'll see if I can reproduce it. You think I'd know my set-up, but I THINK the TV is plugged into the cable box, not the outlet. Don't know if this matters or not...

If the TV is connected to the STB and the outlet at the back is switched, the TV will power on and off in conjunction with the STB. If the outlet is not switched, it will not matter if the STB is on or off.

I recommend plugging the TV into a power strip or wall outlet.

Ok, this is what happened tonight. I first turned on the TV, then pressed the button on the receiver remote to turn on the receiver on the component video 1 mode and the TV turned off. After turning on the TV I then turned OFF the receiver and turned it on by pressing each of the various buttons (video 1, DVD, TV, etc.) as each of those buttons powers the unit on. Anyway I was NOT able to duplicate this. I guess I can turn on the TV after the receiver and see what happens tomorrow.

Seems like Mark's evaluation of the situaiton earlier is indeed correct. But, you mentioned something about the problem happening with the receiver buttons (not remote). Is this still true?

I don't recall if it REALLY happened when I pushed the buttons on the receiver. I called HK tech support and they also think it's the IR signal. With the button I used last night that caused this to happen is for my Wii and I don't need a remote for that, I'll punch in any device code for that device and see what happens.

When I get home today I'll also turn it on with a different button and see what happens.

That is all you need to re-check and verify that manually pressing receiver buttons for different inputs will turn it off. I just don't see a reason for this to happen. If it doesn't, you have your answer and need to figure out another way to operate some of the other components.
