Turntable Questions

I have an old JVC A-15 I would like to start using again. It does not nor has ever had a ground wire. Are some turntables internally grounded or don't need it or what?
I also need it to be farther away from my receiver than the wires will allow. Can I extend the wires with a rca extension cord of male plugs on one end and female on the other? Will I lose sound quality if I do this?
If I need to do something about the ground and or something else to extend the wires, please do tell.
I'd like to use this today so quick advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Sorry, I was at someone elses' beck and call.

If it doesn't hum, don't worry about it. Some need it and some don't. If it does hum and there's a thumb screw on the back of the turntable case, add a wire. Wire gauge won't matter. Adding cable will affect the sound because of the low output voltage and it may make the cable act as an antenna for noise and RF. If you need to extend it much, the best thing to do is find a small line amplifier. If there's any way to locate it close enough to the receiver or preamp to plug it in directly, do that.

I'm gonna try to add 6' extension to the factory cord and if it sucks, I can fall back on cd's.

The biggest problem with adding cable, is that it increases the capacitative load the cartridge sees. Therefore as you add cable you incur HF loss. The best bet, if you have to extend the cable, is to use a phono preamp at the turntable, and use a line input on your receiver.

Thanks for the good word guys. Maybe I'll just move my receiver closer to the turntable. Don't really want to but whatta ya gonna do, right?
