Hi Everyone:

I finally made the decision to purchase a turntable and I was going to go with the Technics 1210 MK5 and no one in my area can get me one. I live in Canada and they just aren't out there. Apparently they are back ordered right from Panasonic and I am told that Panasonic may be dropping the turntable from their product line.

I have recently stumbled across the Stanton line of turntables and I am unsure if these are a unit that would be a close second to the 1210.

Any positive or negative feedback about any of the Stanton models? Which model would you suggest?

thanks in advance...

I haven't tried either, but I will point out that decent turntables are available in droves on the used market.

The LP true-believers are mostly interested in the ultra-goofy high end tables.

I just checked Amazon, and they have new Technics tables for $680. But do you really need the capabilities of a DJ turntable?

Sorry, none of the Stanton units appear to be comparable to the Technics.

Do you have any friends/family in the USA? If so, they can post you the TT after buying it in the USA.

I just received my Technics SL-1200mk2 which I ordered from Musician'sfriend. I live in Canada as well and found no problem getting the Turntable here. You'll be charged brokerage as they only use UPS as courier.

You may ship the table to my address and I will ship to you via USPS which should relieve you of the crazy brokerage fees you can be subject to with UPS delivery from USA to Canada.. I will charge you $20 USD for the service + actual USPS shipping fees. If interested, you may PM me. I can not promise fast service. It will take between 2-4 days for me to get it to a USPS office plus whatever shipping times they take + the original shipping time that the retailer takes to deliver the unit. Overall round trip time will be between 10-16 days to you after payment, is my estimate. Although USPS says it could take much longer via ground. If you choose an express method, it is guaranteed to arrive much sooner according to USPS. Go to www.usps.com and estimate international shipping from me at zipcode 24563 to your address in Canada. Be sure to add signature delivery and insurance to the shipping fees. The package will weigh around 30-35 lbs. The Technics is heavy and it will have considerable packaging to protect it. I am not going to try the table to make sure it works properly: this would require considerable more time for me to properly analyze/verify performance - but I'll open the package if you desire to verify no visible damage before shipping to you. Also remember, you need a high quality cartridge for the product. If you want an extremely well performing cartridge for a reasonable price, I recommend the Denon DL-110, which should be available to you directly in Canada. It measures very well and it's build quality/stylus quality is substantially superior to most items anywhere near it's price range. Stylus experts claim it's stylus is of the quality you expect on units costing far more. Measurements back up this claim. It is mostly neutral; with some slight treble attenuation (-2dB at 10Khz and a slow gradual attenuation there after) and a slight mid-bass and bass rise of 1-2dB over-all. This will make the cartridge slightly more neutral/natural on much recorded music. Distortion is extremely low, with a superb harmonic spectrum profile. Cartridge is easy to set up to get superb inner groove performance with no audible distortion(where as many cheaper carts have problems with the inner grooves). Tracking is excellent and noise floor is extremely low on this cartridge, as it's high grade diamond is of smaller profile than typical ones, thereby allowing the needle to read the less worn grooves on many used records.

In the future, you should consider replacing the arm. The table itself and cartridge I recommend are excellent. The limiting factor is the overly resonant arm on the table. The arm is not a permanent fixture. It was designed to be replaced with superior units. Technics even used to sell the SL-1200MKII without an arm a long time ago so that people could choose their own arm. Technics knows the arm is limited - and used to offer extremely high quality arms in the past - but they discontinued them due to reduced sales when vinyl fell out of favor in the late 80's.

Chris,

I appreciate the offer, but after I posted, I found a used one that was out on rent for only 23 days and they are shipping it to a music store in my city.

I should have it today or tomorrow.....hopefully the condition will be excellent.

Again, I appreciate the offer, very generous of you. And thanks for the tips on cartridges and set up.
