If you want more of a switchers I'd use a DVDO scaler. The VP20, VP30 and VP50 all perform conversion to HDMI. They start at around 1600 but also perform the added value of actually processing the video and scaling it to a higher output resolution. (Crappy analog video will look less crappy on your HDTV).

If you want a receiver that just converts the video the Denon 2807 or Yamaha 2600 both perform upconversion as do thier higher end models.

So upconverting and scaling to HDMI are seperate processes and scaling provides beter picture and sound then just upconverting?

When most receivers "Upconvert" all they are doing is passing the original content down the HDMI cable. When a scaler scales the image it actually runs it through a processor the manipulates the image to attempt to gain resolution or atleast increase resoltuion without significant picture loss. The scaler is always the better solution but is an expensive investment.

It seems that both the denon 2807 and Yamaha seem to be very similar when it comes to iputs and outputs if you had to choose which one would you pick. It would be nice if one of these would let you manually enter on the display the input that was selected instead of just the generic options.

Denon 2807 would be my pick. But I am biased. I'm a dealer. The yamaha is certainly a capable product but I haven't had a single problem with any of the 2807s I've put in.
