Trying to hook up older receiver with existing theater setup

The house we bought a couple years ago left us some presents in the basement. They left us a 70" smart TV with 4 mounted surround speakers, as well as a projector and pre-wired 5.2 Jamo home theater speakers. I'm trying to connect the system to my old Onkyo HT-R420 receiver. I'm assuming I'll need some adapters/converters (or even a whole new receiver, which I'd like to avoid), but I just don't know what I need. I'm not very versed in home theaters. So, I'm attaching what I have in hopes someone can help me out.

The Vidikron has an HDMI cable as well as the RGB cables running from it. I can hook up the HDMI to my Apple TV and get picture on the screen. Just not sure how I'm supposed to go about getting sound. Do the RGB cables go into the red/white/yellow to achieve that? Or do I need some external device to run the HDMI from the projector into, and then the Apple TV plugs into it as well?

And this is a 5.1 receiver, but there are 2 subs. So, I'm guessing I can just put a male/female/female splitter off the back of the receiver to accommodate the two subs, right?

Feel free to ask questions for more clarification if I'm missed anything. Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer some advice/suggestions.

Don't know about the Vidikron thing, not familiar with that and a quick google has them as a projector brand.

Not all that familiar with Appletvs but does it have other than hdmi for audio, like an optical or digital coax connector you can connect to the receiver? Does it have RGB output? RGB cables are video component cables; red/white/yellow are (stereo L/R and video) composite cables. Have you found the speaker connections? I'd try and run a source into your avr so that you can use it to power speakers then use the video RGB output (to test if that is connected to the tv or projector or both perhaps).

Yes, you can easily use a splitter to run two subs (most ".2" receivers only have an internal splitter).

Yeah, the Vidikron is the projector. The Apple TV only has HDMI and USB as options for connectivity. That's why I was thinking I'd need some kind of device to connect both the Apple TV and the projector in order to get audio from the receiver.

There are such things as hdmi converters. You might also see on the back of the tv if you have an optical audio output (many do) or digital coax output and connect that to the avr. May limit the audio, many tvs won't pass but 2.0 that way. Or get a new avr with hdmi....

I might have not been clear, and I apologize if I wasn't. I'm trying to hook the projector up into the receiver to get sound. I can achieve picture only with the Apple TV, which is just a device and not an actual TV, by connecting the already pre-run HDMI cable into the back of the Apple TV. Now, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to get sound through the receiver and into the speakers.

Yes I know what an AppleTV is, just never used one nor that familiar with its connections. When I said audio output from your tv, I meant the tv on the wall but same goes for your projector as to what audio outputs it has (if any) to connect to your avr.

When I first saw your avr I thought I saw video component connections but seems you only have S-video and composite....me, I'd shop for a new avr (or a used one with the connections you need...check accessories4less.com for refurb/new units)

The unit seems to have what you need, no experience tho. An Airport Express might also be a consideration?
