Hi: A friend of mine is trying to decide between a Denon 991 or a Yamaha RX-A1000. Told him both units were equal just decide on features(He is using PSB speakers all round,T-55,C60 center B15 for rears, forget what sub he's using). Would you guys agree or is one better than the other? Thanks

Denon +1 for Audessy
Denon -1 for no preouts (may be a deal breaker by itself)

Yamaha +1 for weight
Yamaha +1 for pre-outs (honestly, this makes the receiver future proof and you can add a dedicated amp later.)
Yamaha +1 for 2x HDMI out

If he needs pre-outs, look for the AVR-3312CI. It's not much more than the AVR-911. It also has 12VDC triggers, IR remote control in and more power.

Hi: He doesn't need the pre-outs lives in a apt and has gotten 1 complainant watching Iron Man already(Hence not sure about adding a sub). Main concern is amp quality overall either has enough power for him. Thanks for all the feedback so far:) I forgot to add up here in Canada 991 $800 RX-A1000 about $1,000 or he saw the Best Buy/Future shop HTR-8063 for $900.

I would take the Yamaha RX-A1000.

And that's coming from a guy who owns nothing but Denon AVR/pre-pros.:D

I think the RX-A1000 has more features and better measurements (THD, SNR, Crosstalk) than the AVR-991.

+1 for the Yammy as I have an older Yamaha RX-V1800 driving an older pSB Image suite of speakers and it sounds great. My Yamaha has been rock solid since
the day I purchased it, 4 years ago

With the newer Yamaha xx10's coming out you should be able to get a better deal on the older versions. My local dealer sold a demo RXA1000 for $750.00 cdn and currently lists the RXA800 for $550.00 with full mfg warranty. Check out some your local boutiques for similar deals....:)

+1 for the Yammy in this case and that's coming from an old fart Denon guy, though ;)

One defective unit should not preclude your selection. Your friend might just prefer the Denon over the Yammy. I say, if possible, give it a fair fight.
