Trump's Threat to Make Canada the 51st. State.

Seriously, I have no life.
If Trump wants to add new states he can two new ones: Washington DC and Puerto Rico.
Most in Puerto Rico don't want to be a US state, they seem to prefer the benefits of being a territory.

Russia would be a great candidate....just think of the strategic advantages as well as significant minerals and other resources.
No way.. For the same reasons he wants Canada but not Mexico! He cancelled refugee resettlement of Afghanis who helped our troops but invited South African whites.

While I believe His Majesty has our backs, I don't think the UK government is of the same mindset. The King may have extended the invitation to Trump, but it certainly wouldn't have been his idea. This is at Starmer's behest. He is willing to sacrifice Commonwealth solidarity by kowtowing to Trump, throwing HM under the bus as a consequence.
I would not be so sure about that. The King has already been somewhat outspoken about this threat of Trump's to Canada and already pointed out to Trump he is Canada's head of state.

I doubt Trump would order an invasion of Canada, but Greenland is another matter.

In any event both Canada and Greenland are within NATO. I would hope that no military commander would recognize, and obey an order from Trump to invade either territory. I would hope in fact that they would apprehend Trump and call another constitutional conference. Our current Constitution is clearly no longer fit for purpose.
Our current situation needs to be recognized for what it is, a Constitutional crisis.

But the whiteness of Russia would be attractive in that sense.

By convention, the King stays above the political fray in order to avoid any accusations of partisanship. The Royal Family use other means to signal their feelings on various matters, including this one.

I don't think there will be an actual invasion of Canada either. I get the sense that he wants to economically cripple Canada, giving us no choice but to acquiesce to his wishes. He has already threatened further retaliation if Canada and Europe strike a trade deal, which is a tell.

Vance's recent comments in Greenland are beyond the pale.

Interesting. Trump says he doesn't care two bits about Canada yet cares if they do a trade deal with Europe. Revenge?

I read this book in high school in the '70s. The one thing that sticks out in my memory of it is that the U.S. president swears a whole lot in the book. I distinctly remember that my English teacher hated it. :D Never did I think it would ever be a remote possibility. Good Reads only gives it 3.2/5.

Perhaps the Brits can come and set fire to the Capitol, the White House and other governmental buildings like they did in 1814? :p

I read the predecessor, "Ultimatum", 40-odd years ago. I just did the Google. Rohmer is still alive at 101!

As both Canada and EU are very big markets for US export any coordination of tariffs/etc will have a big effect on the US economy. US also export different things to Europe vs Canada so a broader part of the US economy will be hurt.

As for "etc" there are other things as well Canada/EU can do, like export tariffs or regulations. While EU export mainly tangible goods to US, the US are exporting mainly services (from tech industry) that can be targeted.

So, it's a mess created by Trump that will hurt all of us while our enemies laugh.

How many US Private, sole owners, and small businesses will have closed their doors, by the end of 2025. Taverns will still be open.....lol Then in 2026. I predict there will not be much left of the middleclass and more of the poor. All goods in our country will cost a lot more too. Do you foresee a possible collapse of our government in 2 years? Loooong story short. lol
