I have just purchased a Phillips 47 Lcd mod. 7432, have spearkcraft speakers AIM one for front channel , and MT7 for Right and left. Next purchase is receiver. I was looking hard at the Onkyo 605 but keep getting mixed reviews. I am running one HDMI cable to TV, plan to by one of the new upconverting DVD players and running that through the receiver along with the cable box. From what i am reading it sounds like the unless I run the DVD directly to the tv the receiver is not going to up convert but actually give me a lesser picture. Is this correct and does the 674 work any better for the additional cost. I just want a good picture, good surround sound. I also have read several posts that if i just want to listen to music the TV has to be on as well, i might have misread but don't want to have to turn on my tv to listen to a cd or radio.

Thanks.

That is incorrect. You will be fine getting the 605 and hooking up both your upscaling dvd player and cable box. The signal will not be degraded at all from either source if you connect them to the Onkyo and use it as your switching source rather than using the tv as one. Any properly functioning AVR will not degrade a video signal unless its video processing is of lesser quality than the original source and in that case you can just turn off the video processing ;).

I would get the Onkyo 605 if I were you :). As far as DVD players go I would recommend looking into Oppo or a lower end HD DVD player from Toshiba. Both will do a great job upscaling, but if DVD-A and SACD aren't important to you think about getting the Toshiba then you get the best of SD and HD for a good price.

Good choice! I recently got the 605 and it will be just fine for you. Image looks ground, sound is incredible!

Also bought the 605 approx. 3 weeks ago, I am very new but I love it. I cannot wait to get the time to hook everything up proper ( I just plugged in the speakers, sub, and cranked it up).

Is the 605 the only sub $500 receiver with HDMI 1.3, Dolby Digital True HD, DTS-HD, and Deep Color? If it is, what is the rest of the market waiting for?

A player that will output a raw audio bitstream, and content that has Deep Color. ;)
