Total newbie looking for some home audio guidance!

Greetings!

I know almost nothing about home audio, but I just moved into a new house that has speakers already installed and wired into the ceiling in multiple rooms including the potential setup for a home theater and would like to take advantage of this system. I currently own an old receiver / speakers, a Magnavox MFX 450 Audio / Video Surround Receiver - I am sure this is a piece of junk and it only has capacity for 5 speakers (2 front / 2 rear and 1 center), so it looks like I'm probably going to need a better receiver and maybe other equipment if I want to take advantage of this system, but I am worthless when it comes to this home audio system stuff.

There are 4 speakers (2 front / 2 rear) setup in the area where the TV will be and then 2 other rooms (kitchen / dining room) that have ceiling speakers as well, plus I have a subwoofer and some other smaller home theater type speakers from that old junky system that may or may not be worth using.

I am not an audiophile (clearly!) and don't really need premium quality sound or anything but am just looking for a basic receiver (or whatever equipment is needed) to enable all of these speakers to be heard with decent quality. I will primarily be watching movies and sports and listening to music, so a nice feature would be if I could be able to control whether the speakers in the other room are on or off. It would be greatly appreciated if anybody could give me some guidance on what type of receiver / equipment that I would need to get this up and running.

Thanks!

You will need to get a 5.1 audio-video receiver (AVR) for your TV area. I like Yamaha and Denon. To get sound to your kitchen / dining room is a whole 'nother ball of wax. Some AVR's have a "Zone 2" output on the back. Connecting that to another receiver or amp may get you sound in those other rooms. All of this depends on how the existing speakers can be connected to the other gear. There are also wireless gizmos out there, but I know nothing about them. A picture is worth a thousand words. Peace and goodwill.
